The New York Giants have compiled a woeful 40-91-1 regular-season record with only one playoff appearance since 2017. Entering his fourth year at the helm in New York, Brian Daboll is responsible for 18 of those victories and the lone playoff berth.
But speculation continues to grow that this may be Daboll’s final opportunity to steer the Giants in the right direction if he wants to remain the team’s long-term head coach.
One name that continues to surface in NFL coaching circles is University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. The former Super Bowl champion and Hall of Famer has found success at the collegiate level, and his son, Shedeur Sanders, is projected to be one of the top selections in this year’s draft.

Is Deion Sanders a ‘Coach in Waiting’ for the New York Giants?
The 2025 NFL Draft is just over a month away, and the Giants’ immediate priority is finding their next franchise quarterback. According to one NFL analyst, if Shedeur is selected by New York, it could open the door for his father to make the jump to the pros.
“Where should Shedeur Sanders go?” NFL analyst Danny Parkins asked on Colin Cowherd’s podcast. “How far he falls? Is Deion Sanders, like, the coach in waiting? Like, does Shedeur Sanders fall to 21 and he goes to Pittsburgh, and he goes to Mike Tomlin and sits behind Aaron Rodgers?
“Then, they’re really damn interesting. Or does he go to the Giants? And it feels like a mortal lock that Brian Daboll gets fired and they hire Deion Sanders. Pretty damn interesting either way.”
Will Giants Trade Up?
The Giants hold the No. 3 overall pick in next month’s draft. According to the latest PFSN mock draft, they are predicted to select Sanders to solidify their quarterback position.
The New York Giants may need to trade up from No. 3 if they want to secure a quarterback in the first round. In this scenario, they stay put and still get their future starter. A smart, accurate quarterback who consistently improved in college, Shedeur Sanders has the tools to succeed in the NFL. The Giants have some pieces in place to support him, but when you get a shot at a potential franchise quarterback, you don’t pass it up.
The Deion, affectionately called Coach Prime, coached his son throughout his youth. At Jackson State, a historically Black college and university (HBCU), Sheduer threw for 6,963 yards and 70 touchdowns in two seasons. At Colorado, he added 7,364 yards and 64 touchdowns over two years.
After a rocky 2023 campaign, Coach Prime led Colorado to a 9-4 record in 2024. He has previously stated that he would consider coaching in the NFL if it meant coaching his sons.
“The only way I would consider is to coach my sons,” Sanders said on GMA3.
However, Coach Prime clarified his statement.
“Not son. Sons,” Sanders emphasized, making it clear that his other son, safety Shilo Sanders, would also need to be part of the equation.
