Should Kevin Durant take a different approach this offseason? The Phoenix Suns star isn’t expected to stay in Phoenix beyond this season, and his future has become a hot topic among NBA fans. Some people assume he’ll join other superstars to form another superteam, but former NBA player Lou Williams has a different idea.
Lou Williams Wants Kevin Durant To Mentor a Young Team
Most NBA superstars at Durant’s level chase championships in the later years of their careers, which makes sense. However, Williams believes Durant should take a different path by joining a young team as a veteran leader.
“No more superteams for KD. Go somewhere where they’re up and coming,” Williams said. “You got some young stars that can do their thing and you can just add to that. You can be the OG. You can be the vet. You can be the guy that they’re going to throw the ball to when they need a bucket for sure for sure. But let these young guys do the heavy lifting.
“You go to San Antonio, and it’s going to be the [Victor Wembanyama] and De’Aaron Fox show, and KD, you’re going to be there, and you gonna be that. I’m not going to say Kevin Durant is going to be a third option, but you can allow these young guys to be the focal point of what they’re building, and you can go out there and be yourself,” Williams said.
"No more superteams for KD… go somewhere where they're up and coming… With the Lakers, with the Mavs it's going to be the same old narratives."

“With the [Los Angeles] Lakers and [Dallas Mavericks], it’s going to be the same old narratives, the same old conversations, the same criticisms every time they lose a game or don’t go on a run that we expect them to go on, it’s going to be the end of the world. You don’t want to end your career like that, and you don’t want to spend your last years like that. Go with some young fresh energy and build from there,” Williams said
While joining a young, developing team wouldn’t give Durant the best shot at another title, Williams believes it’s time for him to try something new instead of forming another superteam.
Ultimately, it all comes down to what Durant wants. He may have won more rings if he had stayed with the Golden State Warriors, but he left because he was ready to move on. Williams sees this as a better way for Durant to finish his career, avoiding the constant media scrutiny. Either way, everyone is left wondering where Durant will land next season.
