Broncos Fill Major Need, Adding 25-TD Security-Blanket TE for Bo Nix on $23 Million Contract

The Denver Broncos have been busy this offseason investing in their defense, re-signing defensive tackle D.J. Jones, and bringing in free agents Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw, all on three-year deals.

However, following QB Bo Nix’s rookie breakout, which established him as the team’s future quarterback, it’s clear that the team needs support on offense as well. Many outlets, including PFSN, have honed in on the three skill positions as the Broncos’ most significant areas of need this offseason.

While the team still needs to find a running mate for No. 1 wideout Courtland Sutton and a replacement for running back Javonte Williams, they did secure their starting tight end for the next few seasons on a reasonable deal in free agency.

Denver Broncos Land Evan Engram on Two-Year Deal in NFL Free Agency

It’s no secret that the Broncos need help at tight end. Adam Trautman led the team’s group last year with 188 receiving yards on 13 receptions (22 targets), reeling in just two touchdowns.

Their latest addition might not help much in the red zone after scoring just one touchdown in 2024, but the two-time Pro Bowler will allow head coach Sean Payton to stretch the field more often. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport states that the Broncos are signing Evan Engram to a two-year, $23 million deal.

Engram is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season, but he was a Pro Bowler as recently as 2023 after hauling in 114 passes for 963 yards and four touchdowns. After averaging more than 10 yards per reception in his first four years in the league, he can serve the offense as a security blanket or vertical threat.

The Broncos are a well-rounded team that has only gotten deeper this offseason. They are coming off a season in which their defense ranked first in PFSN’s defensive rankings, finishing with a 90.6 Defense+ grade. Their offensive line matched their first-place trophy with a near-perfect 99.5 OL+ grade.

Nix was a revelation as a rookie last season. Largely written off by most entering the year, he was largely a dependable player for them at quarterback while also showing flashes of upside. His middle-of-the-pack QB+ grade (74.8, 18th) demonstrated that there is still some growth to be found, but a part of that will be putting more dependable weapons around him in 2025 and beyond.

Outside of Sutton as his WR1, Nix had few dependable assets. Payton recently made it clear that the team’s top priority this offseason was to get a “joker” for the offense, either at tight end or running back. Engram fits that mold with his versatility.

With Engram in tow for the next two seasons, the team can focus on fleshing out its wide receiver room and backfield. Though most of the impact free agent options at those positions have been scooped up, Denver does have the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

In PFSN’s latest mock draft, the Broncos were projected to trade up for Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. With more freedom to address other positions now that Engram is signed, the team could look to take someone like running back Ashton Jeanty (projected to be selected at No. 12 overall), wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan (No. 30), or possibly add a different name with RB Omarion Hampton not getting selected in the first round.
