Nikola Jokic kept it real when discussing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the MVP race the two NBA stars are currently in. Both Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic have been putting up stellar numbers this season, leading them to emerge as frontrunners for the 2024-2025 NBA MVP award.

Nikola Jokic Delivers High Praise for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Over the past few seasons, Jokic has solidified his position as one of the best big men in the league and could end his career as one of the all-time greats. Having already won multiple MVP awards, Jokic reflected on Gilgeous-Alexander’s performance.
“I think this is my third or fourth year in the running. So really, I’m good… I cannot control it. I think I’m playing the best basketball of my life. So if that’s enough, that’s enough. If not, he’s (SGA) the guy that deserves it. He’s amazing.”

It’s refreshing to see an athlete approach the MVP race with such a positive and relaxed attitude, showing respect for his competition and accepting whatever outcome may come.
Statistically, both players have had standout seasons. Jokic has been averaging 28.9 points, 13 rebounds, and 10.5 assists, while Gilgeous-Alexander is putting up 32.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.2 assists.
Although the stats may suggest Jokic is the superior player, the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by Gilgeous-Alexander, boast a significantly better record than the Denver Nuggets or any other team in the Western Conference. This highlights the impact Gilgeous-Alexander has had on his team’s success.
Given that Jokic already has multiple MVPs to his name, Gilgeous-Alexander’s exceptional season with OKC could give him the edge in the race. Leading the top team in the West certainly strengthens his case for winning the MVP.
However, both Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander understand that winning an NBA championship is the ultimate goal. If Gilgeous-Alexander does win the MVP award, the pressure will be on him to guide the Thunder through the challenging Western Conference.
