Last Sunday, Katherine Legge reached a milestone by competing in the NASCAR Cup Series Shriner’s Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway. However, 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace’s spotter, Freddie Kraft, didn’t hold back in criticizing NASCAR’s decision to let Legge race despite her limited stock car experience.
Bubba Wallace’s Spotter Blasts NASCAR for Katherine Legge Decision
Legge’s last NASCAR appearance before Phoenix came at this year’s Ride the ‘Dente 200 at Daytona International Speedway, where she drove the No. 23 Chevrolet for Sigma Performance Services. Earlier this year, she also competed in five Xfinity Series races, with her best finish being 14th at Road America.
Kraft recently voiced his concerns, arguing that NASCAR put Legge in a situation where she was set up to fail.
“Katherine (Legge) made her mistakes, whatever it is. I’m not going to harp on her because I feel like they put her in a position where she wasn’t going to succeed, you know, they set her up for failure because she should have never been approved to run this race,” the veteran spotter said on the “Door Bumper Clear” podcast.
“She ran two stock car ovals in her career. One of them, she was eight laps down at Richmond in 2018, and the other, she ran three laps at Daytona, the show we just had in February. So, for me, how does that possibly qualify you to run in the premier stock car series in the world?”
“Katherine didn’t — I mean, she obviously made a big mistake right here, and for me, Kevin (Kevin Hamlin, Hendrick Motorsports spotter), the bigger thing we talk about, especially with lap cars, is there are guys we know. B.J. (McLeod) is one of them, and B.J. does probably the best job of anybody on the racetrack.
“The biggest thing for us as spotters is making sure we know where you’re gonna be.
“If you’re gonna run the top all day, run the top all day. If you’re gonna run the bottom all day, run the bottom all day. This way, when we are coming up on you, we can tell our driver, ‘Alright, 78’s half a straightaway out front, he’s been top all day, or she’s been top all day.’
“I thought the first time we lapped her, she was fine. Out of the way, backing her entry up a little too much, so guys were kind of getting on top of her a little bit. That was fine, and then I felt like as the day went on, I don’t know, she felt a little bit more racy.
“She would — you know, like, the first guy would go by her, and she would start to close the hole a little bit, and we would be filling the hole behind her.
“She would give a little bit less room. I saw her in the middle of a crowd at one point, where they were splitting her on both sides, and it’s just, I don’t know. But for me, there’s no way you can tell me that she should be approved to run a Cup race based on her past history in NASCAR.”
