With Aaron Rodgers Potentially Joining Steelers, Pittsburgh’s DeShon Elliott May Regret Recent 7-Word Diss at the QB

Aaron Rodgers’ uncertain future has dominated the offseason after the New York Jets decided to move on from the veteran quarterback after two seasons. While Rodgers’ numbers were actually better than his last full season in 2022 with the Green Bay Packers, the Jets slipped to a 5-12 record and, thus, decided to release him.

Shortly following the opening of the legal tampering period, Rodgers is reportedly close to agreeing to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While all of Pittsburgh would likely welcome the four-time NFL MVP, defensive back DeShon Elliott may find himself in an awkward situation after calling for Rodgers’ retirement last month.

DeShon Elliott Could Regret Roasting Aaron Rodgers

In a since-deleted comment under an Instagram post in February 2024 about Pittsburgh possibly signing Rodgers, Elliott didn’t hold back in his blunt response.

“Leave his a** at the retirement home.”

It was a short and pretty disrespectful shot at the Super Bowl-winning, future Hall of Fame quarterback, and it didn’t take long for the internet to notice — despite Elliott quickly deleting the comment. If the Steelers do sign Rodgers, how will that affect their relationship?

Pittsburgh and Rodgers could finalize a deal by Tuesday, March 11, per NBC’s Mike Florio and multiple other sources. They are expected to sign the contract the following day when the official league year begins.

Rodgers’ short time with the Jets was marked by injuries and inconsistency, which led many, including Elliott, to call on him to retire. The former Offensive Player of the Year posted the lowest passer rating of his career as a starter in 2024 and finished 21st in PFSN’s QB rankings. He recorded 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions through the season.

How Signing Rodgers Impacts the Steelers

Signing Rodgers would pair the future Hall of Famer with Mike Tomlin, who has never had a losing record in his 18 seasons as Pittsburgh’s head coach. Rodgers would also team up with newly acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf, who signed a five-year, $150 million deal after being traded from the Seattle Seahawks.

The potential Rodgers-Steelers partnership is seen as high-risk, high-reward. But despite concerns, he remains one of the most experienced quarterbacks available in free agency. With an elite defense and a revamped offense, Rodgers could help Pittsburgh compete for the AFC North crown in an ultra-competitive division.
