Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla Drops Promising 3-Word Injury Update on Kristaps Porziņģis After His 6-Game Absence

The Boston Celtics dominate the Eastern Conference and hold the second-best record in the league at 47-18. While the team continues to thrive with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum leading the charge, they have been missing a key piece of their roster – Kristaps Porziņģis, who has been sidelined due to a mysterious illness.

The uncertainty surrounding his condition and potential return has sparked speculation about his long-term future with the franchise. However, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has now cleared the air with a strong three-word message, hinting that the big man will soon be making his comeback.

Celtics’ HC Provides Update on Kristaps Porziņģis’ Return to the Court

Porziņģis has been out for a while, missing his fifth straight game during the Celtics’ 111-101 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on March 9, 2025. He also remained sidelined in the following game against the Utah Jazz on March 10, where Boston secured a 114-108 victory.

Naturally, his extended absence has raised concerns among fans. But Mazzulla finally addressed the situation, keeping his response short and clear:

Joe Mazzulla on Kristaps Porziņģis: “He’s getting close.”

Porziņģis first missed a game due to illness on Feb. 25, when he was a late scratch before tipoff against the Toronto Raptors. He did return the next day in a loss to the Detroit Pistons, but it was evident he wasn’t at 100%—he looked sluggish and unwell. Since then, he has missed six consecutive games.

Ahead of the Celtics’ matchup against the Jazz, he was initially listed as doubtful before being downgraded to out. Mazzulla previously explained why the 7-footer has remained out of action.

“He’s sick,” Mazzulla said. “He’s coming into the facility daily, trying to get shots up, sweat it out. He’s just not feeling well. He is working to get back.”

Porziņģis Addresses Rumors Surrounding His Illness

Porziņģis’ absence isn’t due to an injury but an illness. However, with no clear explanation about its nature, speculation began to grow regarding his availability.

To put the rumors to rest, the Celtics’ star center took to X to provide an update on his health. While he didn’t specify the illness, he reassured fans that he is on the road to recovery.

“I have been dealing with some viral illness that we haven’t been able to identify yet,” Porziņģis wrote. “I am recovering and getting better, but still working my way back to full strength to help this team. Thanks for (your) support, and I’m hoping for a healthy return soon.”

Meanwhile, the Celtics continue their dominant run. With recent victories over the Lakers and Jazz, Boston is now riding a five-game winning streak as they push toward the postseason.
