The Los Angeles Rams are in for a transformational summer. While they did eventually decide to bring back Matthew Stafford, the team is still dead set on moving on from Cooper Kupp. A former Super Bowl MVP and winner, Kupp’s initial reveal about the Rams’ plan to trade him was a shock in and of itself.
But the latest news making its way out of the City of Angels will leave fans even more befuddled. After back-to-back playoff exits, the Rams are clearly to shake up their roster. And that begins with getting rid of Kupp at any cost.
Los Angeles Rams Planning Shock Cooper Kupp Move
His 2021 season will be one to remember. But since that season, an ugly truth has become apparent about the 31-year-old. In the following three seasons, Kupp missed a total of 18 games, causing the slow starts that the Rams became infamous for.
Now, after seeking a potential trade for the former Super Bowl MVP, Los Angeles is willing to go a step further. The latest report from Adam Schefter suggests that cutting him is on the board of options for L.A.
“Sources: Rams are planning to release WR Cooper Kupp after the start of the new league year unless a trade materializes,” Schefter wrote in a post on X.
It has been a dramatic fall from grace for a receiver who was in the conversation for best wide receiver on the planet just a few seasons ago. And even in an injury-prone year, he was good for 710 yards on just 67 receptions, while adding six touchdowns to his tally.
However, his yards per attempt were also tied for the lowest in his career, as it became clear that age was starting to catch up to him. Add in the $20 million he’s set to make, and it becomes clear why the Rams wanted to go elsewhere.
In 2025, Kupp was set to have a cap hit of $29.78 million. The Rams will save $7.5 million in cap space if they cut him this offseason. Already, the team has been active in free agency, bringing in Tutu Atwell on a one-year, $10 million deal and Davante Adams on a two-year, $44 million contract.
Those upgrades to the wide receiver room, through sheer availability alone, could make Los Angeles a more consistent team come the regular season. And with Stafford around for just a few more years, they should potentially give him one last hurrah.
