‘Worth Every Penny,’ ‘Holy Overpay’ — NFL World Has Mixed Reaction to Bills QB Josh Allen’s Historic $330,000,000 Contract

The Buffalo Bills gave Josh Allen a massive contract extension, keeping him in Buffalo through 2030. The six-year, $330 million deal includes $250 million guaranteed, the most ever given to an NFL player. Naturally, the NFL world had mixed reactions to the record-breaking deal.

Bills Reward Josh Allen After MVP 2024 Season

Allen is coming off arguably the best season of his NFL career in 2024, throwing for 3,731 yards with 28 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Allen was named the NFL MVP for his incredible season where he led the Bills to the AFC Championship Game.

Allen scored a 91.9 in PFSN’s QB+ metric, ranking No. 3 in the NFL behind only Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. The Bills finished as the No. 4 ranked offense in the NFL with an 88.0 grade, according to PFSN’s Offense+ metric.

Allen has led the Bills to the playoffs in every season since 2020 and has consistently performed as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.

Before signing his new extension, Allen earned just over $43 million in 2024, making him the 14th-highest paid quarterback in the NFL — an incredible bargain for the Bills. His new contract will significantly boost his salary to $55 million per season in annual average value (AAV), tying him with Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, and Jordan Love and falling short of only Dak Prescott, who earns a league-high $60 million AAV.

Did the Bills Overpay for Josh Allen?

Is $330 million with a historic $250 million guarantee too rich for Allen’s services? The answer is likely a resounding no. As the cap continues to increase each year, the market value of a franchise quarterback continues to soar to unprecedented heights.

Allen is one of the best quarterbacks in football, and with less decorated quarterbacks like  Lawrence and Love earning a similar AAV on their recent contracts, paying Allen was a no-brainer for Buffalo, N.Y.

Allen has turned Buffalo into a perennial playoff contender, and by representing the Bills so well both on and off the field, he gave the organization no choice but to reward him with such a massive investment.

Allen Hopes To Pay Buffalo Back With Super Bowl

Allen has been one of the most dynamic and decorated quarterbacks in the NFL over the last few seasons, and the only thing left to accomplish to cement his legacy is to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

Allen hasn’t even performed poorly in the playoffs — in fact, he is one of the elite playoff performers in NFL history at the quarterback position. In 13 career playoff games, Josh Allen has a passer rating of 101.7 with 3,359 yards, 25 passing touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns, and just four interceptions

Despite his heroics, however, the Bills have been unable to get over the proverbial hump and win the AFC, largely due to the Kansas City Chiefs acting as a major roadblock. Allen and the Bills have had their season ended by the Chiefs in four out of the last five years.

Allen’s 0-4 playoff record against Mahomes is historic for all the wrong reasons: It is the most losses to a single quarterback in NFL postseason history.

Over the course of Allen’s new six-year contract, the expectation is that he can finally change the narrative and ultimately lead Buffalo to its first Super Bowl championship in franchise history.
