Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones caused a stir when describing the franchise’s offseason plan, refusing to slap the word “aggressive” on free agency.
Jones is going to “fill voids” in the 2025 NFL Draft to fix a broken roster. Dallas finished last season with a disappointing 7-10 record and missed the postseason for the first time since 2020, officially being eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16.

NFL Analyst Calls Jerry Jones Out for Comment
NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt is known for his comedic hot takes on “Good Morning Football.” He has often fueled fan bases and shamed franchises for making dumb decisions. Recently, he threw the Dallas Cowboys into the furnace.
Brandt, after hearing Jones’ comments on free agency, grabbed the poker and stoked the fire as he held up a $20 bill and challenged Jones to spend money.
“He said, ‘My hand doesn’t cramp up when I write checks.’ Well, maybe we should check on that,” Brandt said. “I think Jerry might need some electrolytes, or some bananas, or something like that, because the hand is cramping and if you didn’t do it last year and you haven’t signed a Pro Bowl free agent since a punter [in 2021]. … What are we waiting for?
“The Cowboys are this elderly person in your life. They are terrified to spend any money and they don’t even want to go out and buy a sandwich, let alone go on a vacation. You’re like, ‘You’ve saved your whole life. We checked the finances. You’re good. You’re comfortable.’ And they’re like, ‘No, I think I should just stay here and sit on my couch and watch reruns.'”

The punter referred to in the above rant was Bryan Anger, who is a two-time Pro Bowl punter. The Cowboys first inked him to a one-year deal in 2021, then signed him to a three-year extension worth $9 million in 2022. Anger averaged 48.5 yards per punt (62 punts for 3,005 yards) for Dallas in 2024.

Brandt said, “In the last 15 years, the Dallas Cowboys have signed one free agent who has made a Pro Bowl. That free agent was Bryan Anger. Guys, he plays punter. That’s it.”
Jones: Aggressive Is Not ‘the Right Word’
Jones started the firestorm when he told reporters that the Cowboys don’t plan to spend money in free agency. He would rather target young talent in the NFL Draft to plug the holes on his roster.
“I don’t think aggressive is the right word,” Jones said, via Jon Machota. “I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids.”

It’s an interesting strategy for a team on the decline and even more interesting when you consider that the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders — Dallas’ top two rivals in the NFC East — just played each other in the NFC Championship Game.
Both the Eagles and Commanders were big spenders in free agency last offseason. The Eagles went on to win Super Bowl 59. Meanwhile, the Cowboys haven’t been to the Super Bowl or NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season.
