Warriors Star Stephen Curry Finds Unexpected Ally in Retired NFL Star for Mac Dre Documentary

Stephen Curry has been known to make magic happen on the court. But this time, he’s stepping into the film world — bringing Bay Area culture with him.

The Golden State Warriors superstar is producing a documentary on legendary rapper Mac Dre. In a surprise twist, retired NFL icon is teaming up with him to make it happen.

You couldn’t ask for a better duo to tell this story.

Stephen Curry Unites With a Legend to Honor a Bay Area Icon

People from the Bay area know that Mac Dre isn’t just a rapper, he’s a movement.

The Vallejo-raised artist was born as Andre Hicks. He was a pioneer of the hyphy movement. Not only that, he shaped Bay Area hip-hop with tracks like “Feelin’ Myself,” “Get Stupid,” and “Make You Mine.” His influence stretched beyond music — his energy, slang, and independent grind were also well-renowned.

Sadly, Mac Dre’s life was cut short in 2004. He was shot and killed in Kansas City at just 34 years old. But his legacy never faded.

Now, Curry and the retired NFL icon Marshawn Lynch are ensuring his story is told correctly.

Lynch, an East Bay legend himself, brings a raw, authentic energy that fits Mac Dre’s legacy perfectly. Having spent part of his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders, his project is just another way of giving back to his community.

“We at Beastmode Productions are thrilled to partner with Unanimous Media to produce and celebrate the extraordinary life of Mac Dre,” said Diaunte Thompson, co-founder of Lynch’s Beastmode Productions.

The documentary will feature Wanda Salvatto, Mac Dre’s mother. She will share her son’s story — his rise, his influence, and how his music still lives on.

Mac Dre Project Gains Major Momentum

The idea goes back to 2016. Drake brought Mac Dre’s mother onstage at a concert in Oracle Arena, praising her son’s impact on his music.

Guess who was sitting in the crowd that night? Stephen Curry. That moment helped plant the seed for this project, and now? It’s finally becoming a reality.

Curry’s Unanimous Media first announced the documentary in 2023. It has been in the works for a while. But now, finally, with Lynch and Beastmode Productions officially on board, the film just got a major boost.

Director Michelle Parker is leading the creative side. She is known for her work with Wiz Khalifa, Cardi B, Young Thug, to name a few.

Curry and Lynch’s collaboration on this documentary is as Bay Area as it gets. With the right people, energy, and purpose, this project is shaping up to be a must-watch for hip-hop fans, Bay Area natives, and anyone who appreciates a true pioneer.
