It’s a difficult time to be a Dallas Mavericks fan, that’s for sure. When Nico Harrison traded Luka Dončić to bring Anthony Davis to town, more than a few eyebrows were raised, especially given Davis’s injury history over the last few years.
Davis’s injury history was once again in the spotlight mere hours after Kyrie Irving’s season ended early owing to an ACL tear. This time it was NBA insider Shams Charania who delivered some bad news during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“Anthony Davis has been out since the opener, since the first game he played [with the Mavericks],” Charania noted. “I think him, his representatives are gonna huddle up. I think they’re gonna have some very hard conversations. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that one game was the last time we’ve seen AD this season.”
Where Dallas Mavericks Stand With Anthony Davis Out Injured
When Dallas traded Dončić away for Davis, they were essentially tossing a snowball into hell hoping it would give them a shot at making a run in the playoffs. While it was difficult to foresee it unravelling so quickly, the Mavericks are now stuck between a rock and a hard place after Irving’s season-ending injury.

They have lost four of their last five games and are now 10th in the Western Conference.
They currently do not have the services of Davis, Irving, backup guard Jaden Hardy and center Dereck Lively II. Backup center Daniel Gafford has also been unavailable since Feb. 10 owing to a knee injury while PJ Washington Jr. is also out of the picture with a right ankle sprain.
Speaking to reporters after the blowout loss to the Sacramento Kings, coach Jason Kidd addressed the fact that the Mavs are “running out of bodies.”
“It seems every time we get close to getting somebody back, someone goes down,” Kidd told reporters.
At this point, given where they are in the Western Conference standings, it would make sense for the Mavs to shut Davis down for the rest of the year.
Dallas is currently 3.5 games ahead of the No. 11-seed Phoenix Suns and four games ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers who are the No. 12 seed.
