The Philadelphia 76ers have been quite underwhelming this season, and even that would be a massive understatement. Daryl Morey and Co. signed Paul George in July 2024 to add to a star-studded roster led by Joel Embiid.
Nick Nurse’s roster was already strengthened by Tyrese Maxey, who has proven talented on the biggest stage. Despite the addition of George, the Sixers haven’t been able to live up to expectations, and Embiid’s fitness is also one reason.
Did Joel Embiid Retire? Latest Update on the 76ers Center’s Injury
The 2024 Summer Olympics gold-medal winner has struggled with a lingering knee injury that has prevented him from giving his all on the floor. On Friday, Feb. 28, the Sixers announced that Embiid would be shut down for the season so that he could focus on his treatment.
This made massive waves on social media, where many speculated if it was the end of his career in Philly. However, one particular X account spread rumors that he has retired from the NBA.

Older fans may be familiar with “NBACentel,” an account often mistaken as “NBACentral,” a popular aggregation account on social media. Many players have fallen victim to their posts on X, and those on Embiid have generated more than nine million views.
To sum it up, officially, Embiid has not retired. He is only on the sidelines until he recovers from the swelling in his left knee.
What Is Next for the Sixers Amid Embiid’s Current Injury Status?
One of the main problems for the 76ers right now would be the lack of financial freedom. Embiid will earn $55.2 million next year and more than $59 million the season after that.
This leaves Philly in a tough spot, where it would have to offload one of its big three of George, Maxey and Embiid. That is the only option if Morey wants to add further depth to the roster.

Jared McCain, who was widely regarded as one of the top young talents, is also on the sidelines indefinitely with a meniscus tear. With that said, it does look like all hope is lost for the Sixers (20-38, 12th in the Eastern Conference) this season considering George’s troubles with injuries as well.
The Philly-based team’s best bet would be to let the season play out with George, and hold on to its first-round pick while Embiid recovers. When both McCain and Embiid return, the 76ers will hope for better luck with injuries next season.
