NFL Insider Provides Major Update on Matthew Stafford’s Negotiations With Rams, Giants, and Raiders

The Athletics Dianna Russini provides an update on Stafford, as he is set to meet with the Rams in person to discuss his future with the team.

The biggest domino this NFL offseason is most likely going to be the status of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. There are some other big names that might be on the move, of course, such as Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, but none as big as a top starting QB.

Stafford, currently under contract with the Rams but looking for a new deal, has been linked in trade rumors to teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants. There has been more developments with the Stafford situation, as provided by an NFL insider.

Rams Set to Meet Matthew Stafford in Person in LA

Per Dianna Russini of the Athletic, Matthew Stafford and the Rams are meeting in person Friday, February 28th to talk about his future with the team.

Russini also notes that both the Raiders and the Giants have discussed a two-year deal with Stafford that would include $90-100M guaranteed. It appears as though this situation will be resolved shortly, as a deal is expected “soon.”

The Rams went on a solid end of season run under Stafford, making it to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs and taking the Eagles to the final minute. The Rams were the only team to keep the final score within one-score of the Eagles four playoff victories.

It was the tale of two seasons for Stafford, as the Rams were missing their top two wide receivers in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua for the majority of the first half of the season. Once he had both of those guys healthy, Stafford and the Rams went on a run.

The Rams ended the season with a 10-7 record, finishing the year on a 9-3 run after starting 1-4. Stafford, who just turned 37 earlier in February, is in the twilight of his career and was a mixed bag in 2024.

He ended the season as the 22nd-ranked QB according to PFNs QB+ metric, with a QB+ of 71.9. This rating, of course, is brought down by the lack of weapons at the beginning of the season, but is still part of the story for Stafford.

There are some in the NFL media that believe this meeting with the Rams is a goodbye meeting, as the Chase Daniel believes the Rams are not going to meet Staffords demands of $50M per year.

If the Rams do indeed move on from Stafford, they have Jimmy Garoppolo currently under contract, and Russini previously reported that the Rams would be comfortable with Garoppolo as their starting QB if Stafford is moved.
