Shedeur Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes played several close games in their 9-4 campaign in 2024. Two games, especially the one against Baylor, which they won 38-31 in overtime, and the game against Kansas, which ended in a 31-28 loss, stand out.
The quarterback is the important position in football, and one such pass from Sanders changed the game on its head. He recalled the moment in the latest episode of his podcast.

Shedeur Sanders Recalls Hail Mary Pass Against Baylor
On his “2Legendary” podcast, the Buffaloes quarterback was asked about his most legendary play in the 2024 season. Sanders didn’t need much time to answer that.
“Of course, the Hail Mary, I would say,” the QB said. “I feel like it’s a lot of different plays, but the Hail Mary, I would say, is the most legendary play.”
The play Sanders is talking about took place in the game against Baylor. With the game on the line, Colorado needed a touchdown in order to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Instead of going to Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, Sanders threw a pass to LaJohntay Wester, who caught the ball for a 43-yard touchdown pass. This tied the game 31-31.
Getting into the details of the moment, Shedeur added:
“We had six-man protection. They loaded everybody up to the right side. I told the running back, ‘Seal the left side with your life on the line.’ I looked at him and told him that. I said, ‘Hey, bro, do everything you can.’ And I rolled left.
“One receiver, who’s a jump-ball guy, fell. Travis was getting quadruple-teamed on the right side because he was going to go all the way across the field. We had LaJohntay — 5’8″. I threw it up, and LaJohntay made it happen.”
Another Iconic Play Followed Sanders’ Hail Mary Pass
As mentioned, the Hail Mary pass only tied the game. To start overtime, Sanders and Co. managed to score a touchdown, leaving Colorado’s defense to make sure the Bears’ offense didn’t score on them during overtime.
Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson managed to bring his offense to the 2-yard line. That is when Hunter showed his dual-threat abilities, forcing a fumble and sealing the deal for the Buffaloes.
“That play when it was guaranteed touchdown, Trav made that play, I said, oh my God… When he fumbled, I’m like, okay, thank you,” Sanders said at the time.
“We done got out of here with a good dub; now the week ain’t messed up, we’re at least able to enjoy it a little bit. At least for 24 hours before we gotta get back focused for the next opponent.”
The win against Baylor was important as it gave Colorado the confidence that they could come up big in clutch situations.
