Bears Predicted To Give Caleb Williams Another Weapon, Adding $26.7 Million Star WR Alongside D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze

Seth Trachtman predicted the Bears will give quarterback Caleb Williams another offensive weapon, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, this offseason.

The Chicago Bears sent a clear message by hiring Ben Johnson, one of the league’s top offensive coordinators the past few seasons, as head coach. The organization is all in on developing quarterback Caleb Williams.

Chicago already has D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze as targets for Williams as wide receivers. However, adding another veteran in Cooper Kupp isn’t out of the question.

Bears Predicted To Acquire Cooper Kupp

Kupp released a statement on Feb. 3 that the Los Angeles Rams are seeking to trade him this offseason. The 31-year-old broke the news himself on social media.

“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp wrote on X. “I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA.

“Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember.”

Since then, pundits have linked the 31-year-old receiver to numerous teams. On Feb. 11, Yardbarker’s Seth Trachtman proposed the Bears acquire Kupp.

“The Rams have placed Kupp on the trade block, and several teams should be interested despite his quickness slowing due to age,” Trachtman wrote. “Chicago could be at the top of the list with new head coach Ben Johnson, especially if the team is unable to re-sign Keenan Allen.”

Kupp and Keenan Allen are similar in age and style. Even in his prime, Kupp played a majority of his offensive snaps in the slot. That is the role Allen fulfilled for the Bears last season.

Slot receiver was a key part of Johnson’s offense with the Detroit Lions the past few seasons, with leading receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown filling the role. In Johnson’s system, St. Brown played a majority of his snaps in the slot according to Pro Football Focus.

Kupp could fill that role in 2025, becoming the No. 3 receiver for Williams.

D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze Want To Play With Kupp

It’s safe to say Moore and Odunze would be fans of the Bears acquiring Kupp.

While appearing on “Up & Adams,” Moore and Odunze were both highly complimentary of the Rams’ veteran wideout. When asked which available receiver would he want the Bears to pursue this offseason, Moore answered Kupp.

“He does it all in the slot and can maneuver. It’s like the game is slow for him,” said Moore.

Odunze added: “I’d love to have Coop Kupp too. He’s awesome. He has ties with Junior Adams, my wide receivers coach at U-Dub [Washington, where Odunze went to college], so that’d be cool to see him with us.”

During Williams’ rookie season, the Bears were 27th in passing touchdowns and 31st in passing yards. They were also second-to-last in net passing yards per attempt.

Williams finished 33rd in PFSN’s QB+ metric with a D grade. He posted a 62.5% completion percentage with 3,541 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He averaged 6.3 yards per pass.

“Williams’ rookie season ended on a relatively high point in Week 18 with a win over the Packers. It was also an above-average performance for him this season, but since it was a C, that says more about the rest of the season than Week 18,” wrote PFSN’s Ben Rolfe.

“On the season, Williams’ numbers are not good, but they’re not as bad as we saw from Young in his rookie year. Williams finished with a -0.05 EPA/DB (31st), a 30.5 third-down conversion rate (36th), and 5.5 nYPA (37th). He was better in relative terms from a clean pocket, ranking 24th (0.18 EPA/DB) than when pressured (32nd, -0.48 EPA/DB).”

Adding a veteran such as Kupp could be a key addition to Williams’ development.
