After losing a 38-35 nail-biter to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57, the Philadelphia Eagles waited two years to get their revenge on football’s biggest stage.
In Super Bowl 59, the Eagles did exactly that, defeating the Chiefs to ruin their historic three-peat. They jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. The final score of the game? 40-22 — a dominant victory.
The Eagles defense was impressive, especially edge rusher Josh Sweat. But there was one player on offense who shined brighter than all the rest. Who is this year’s Super Bowl MVP? Let’s take a look at who is headed to Disney World.

Jalen Hurts Takes Home Super Bowl MVP Award
In some years, there is an obvious, clear-cut Super Bowl MVP. In other years, there are a number of players who have a strong argument for the award.
Super Bowl 59 falls into the latter category, as the Eagles dominated all facets of the game and had multiple worthy candidates.
For a bit, it looked like a defensive player might win the Super Bowl MVP award for the 10th time in NFL history.
Sweat filled the stat sheet, recording six tackles, 2.5 sacks, two tackles for a loss, and three QB hits. Sweat is an upcoming free agent, so he likely made himself some money with his monster performance in the Super Bowl. Sweat is currently the No. 3 ranked free agent on PFN’s Top 100 Free Agent Ranking.

Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean also shined. He picked the perfect time to deliver the first pick-six of his NFL career, jumping in front of Patrick Mahomes’ pass to intercept him and return it 38 yards for a touchdown.
However, it was Jalen Hurts who took home the Super Bowl MVP award, and deservedly so. He was responsible for three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) and finished with 293 total yards (221 yards passing and 72 yards rushing).

Hurts’ 72 rush yards are a Super Bowl record for a QB, surpassing his own mark of 70 from two years ago. In fact, Hurts led both teams in rushing yards, joining Steve Young (Super Bowl XXIX vs. the San Diego Chargers) as the only quarterbacks to lead both teams in rushing yards in Super Bowl history.
He also became the fifth quarterback ever with multiple touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in a Super Bowl, joining Ken Anderson (Super Bowl XVI), Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (Super Bowl XXXI) and Joe Montana (Super Bowl XIX), and Patrick Mahomes (Super Bowl LIV).
Hurts, who had 304 passing yards and 70 rushing yards in Super Bowl LVII, is the first quarterback ever with at least 200 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in multiple Super Bowls. He also became the third quarterback with a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown in multiple Super Bowls, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers John Elway (Super Bowls XXI and XXXIII) and Montana (Super Bowls XVI and XIX).
Hurts’ 83.7 QB+ was the second-best in a playoff game in his career, behind Super Bowl 57 two years ago vs. the Chiefs (84.3). Overall, it was his fourth-best grade of this season.
Quarterbacks have now won the Super Bowl MVP award 34 times throughout NFL history, including in seven of the last nine Super Bowls.
Time and time again, Hurts made big plays with his arm and his legs.
Hurts got the Eagles on the scoreboard first, falling into the end zone and scoring using his infamous Tush Push.
He also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter.
Then, Hurts delivered the dagger, launching a 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith in the final minutes of the third quarter to give Philly a 34-0 lead.

Hurts has now been incredible in both of his Super Bowl performances. In Super Bowl 57, he totaled 374 yards (304 passing and 70 rushing) and four touchdowns (three rushing and one passing), but his Eagles came up just short against Mahomes, who took home Super Bowl MVP honors.
The Eagles received some criticism when they gave Hurts a five-year, $255 million contract in April 2023, making him the highest-paid quarterback in the league at the time. Well, that contract has aged well, as he’s now the ninth-highest-paid QB in the NFL and he’s worth every penny.
The MVP award is chosen by a panel comprised of 16 media members — broadcast partner analysts, media from New Orleans, Kansas City, and Philadelphia, Pro Football Writers of America-appointed pool reporters that have attended team practice sessions during Super Bowl week, past Pro Football Writers of America presidents, at-large members of the national media — and fans interactively through the league’s official website, NFL.com.
