NFL analyst Steve Muench does not view Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter as a top-five pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. While he did note that this largely came down to the positional needs of the team’s drafting in the top five, it is still a surprising take that goes against what many people project will take place come April’s NFL Draft.
Hunter is one of the most versatile prospects in National Football League history as he can play elite football on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. He had a phenomenal campaign and won the Heisman Trophy this year, an award presented annually to the best player in college football that season.

What Did Steve Muench Say About Travis Hunter?
Muench made clear that he had Hunter high in his big board ranking but believed that the team’s drafting near the top of the order had other, more pressing positional needs. The statement was made on ‘The McShay Show’ and has been uploaded to the YouTube channel ‘Todd McShay’.
“It’s going to get spun on me, he is not a top-five pick in this draft. Look, we are getting into mock draft season right, big boards are one thing. And, Travis Hunter is two, maybe three on my big board. So, keep it all in mind, keep it all in perspective.
But, when you start looking at mock drafts, you start looking at needs, you start realizing that quarterbacks are going to go earlier, you start realizing how good this EDGE class is. I start looking at it and I think it’s more probable than not that Travis Hunter doesn’t go in those first five picks,” Muench stated.
Travis Hunter 2025 NFL Draft Projection
Despite the claims made by Muench, most analysts currently project Hunter as a top five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings had Hunter being selected No. 4 overall by the New England Patriots in his latest 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft.
As Cummings outlines, “The golden question is which position Travis Hunter will play in the NFL. He’s a near blue-chip prospect on my board at both wide receiver and cornerback. I think his uncommon three-level threat profile would do Drake Maye wonders at WR.”
While it remains to be seen whether Hunter is picked within the top five, it is clear that Muench, despite popular opinion, does not believe this will be the case.
