Former NFL player Cam Newton believes that Colorado Buffaloes dual threat wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter has the ability to be a generational talent. While appearing alongside Hunter on his popular YouTube channel ‘The Travis Hunter Show’, Newton outlined how there are various different things that go in to being a generational talent, something that he is believes Hunter has at a greater level than other prospects do.
Hunter had a dominant campaign for the Buffaloes this year and drastically improved his draft stock in the process. He had 96 receptions for 1,258 receiving yards, and 16 total touchdowns offensively. On the defensive side of the ball, Hunter amassed four interceptions and one forced fumble for the Buffaloes. Due to this amazing season, Hunter was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the best player in college football this year.

What Did Cam Newton Say About Travis Hunter?
Newton made clear that Hunter was a special talent and prospect. The clip was posted on Hunter’s YouTube channel.
“Shedeur and Cam, you know, they’re your only quarterbacks that you kind of reach for. But, generational for you, it’s a different monster now. Cause now you’ve gotta sell tickets, how does he impact the ticket sales.
Do you give our fan base the confidence that when they say, ‘with the first pick of the…’, and they see your name called it’s like what. You have that type of cache, not a lot of players have that type of cache,” Newton outlined.
Travis Hunter 2025 NFL Draft Projection
Hunter’s ability to play on both sides of the ball makes him one of the most intriguing and versatile prospects in recent memory. Though it is unclear whether he will play both offense and defense at the professional level, he is expected to be taken quite high in the upcoming NFL Draft.
This sentiment was shared by Pro Football Network NFL Draft Analyst Ian Cummings, who had Hunter being selected No. 4 overall by the New England Patriots in his latest 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft.
As Cummings notes, “The golden question is which position Travis Hunter will play in the NFL. He’s a near blue-chip prospect on my board at both wide receiver and cornerback. I think his uncommon three-level threat profile would do Drake Maye wonders at WR.”
While it remains to be definitively seen where he is drafted or which position he plays full-time, it is evident that Newton believes that Hunter is one of the most exciting prospects available this year.
