The Luka Dončić-Anthony Davis trade was one of the more shocking moves in NBA history, with many outside of basketball circles sharing their shock and opinions about the trade between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.
Days later, multiple NFL stars at Super Bowl week in New Orleans proposed what a similar level of trade would be in football.
What Would the NFL Equivalent of the Luka Dončić Trade Be?
Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II was interviewed by Pro Football Sports Network at the NFL Honors red carpet show. When asked what the NFL version of the Dončić-Davis trade would be, Surtain suggested it would be like a Josh Allen-for-Lamar Jackson trade.

Allen was a common thread in other answers to the NFL equivalent of this trade. Cleveland Browns’ edge rusher Myles Garrett suggested it would be similar to an Allen-for-Chris Jones swap. In addition, Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins proposed an Allen-for-Christian McCaffrey trade.
It appears as though players are seeing Allen as Dončić’s equivalent in this deal, and there are certainly some similarities between the two. Both were drafted in 2018 and have achieved tremendous individual success to date. Dončić is a five-time first-team All-NBA selection, while Allen has finished inside the top five in MVP voting four times.
However, neither has won a title yet, despite both being among the consensus best players in their sport. Dončić has led his team a step further in the playoffs, with the Mavericks reaching the 2024 NBA Finals as a No. 5 seed. Allen won his first MVP in 2024 and has won seven playoff games, but has yet to lead the Bills to the Super Bowl.
To be fair, it’s still very early in both players’ careers, and most expect both to achieve higher levels of individual and team success. Allen and the Bills are perennial title contenders who have a singular nemesis in the Kansas City Chiefs. The Lakers are a fresher case but have the fifth-best title odds at DraftKings Sportsbook with the new Dončić-LeBron James pairing.
The good news for Bills Mafia is that it’s even more unlikely that Allen will be on the move anytime soon. Given how dismayed Dallas fans have been in the wake of Dončić’s departure, the only safe cross-sport bet is that Buffalo fans would react even more harshly.
