The Luka Dončić trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis was as close to a nexus event as you can get. A franchise cornerstone being traded of the team’s own volition at just 25 years of age is wild. Its vibrations are being felt all over the NBA and it has permeated to the NFL as well.
During Super Bowl week, it was a key question for a lot of players. As media night commenced, one gridiron great in particular had to share his thoughts with the world — Mavericks superfan and Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller, Patrick Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes Cannot Hide His Hurt Over Luka Dončić Trade
Ever since the two came into the spotlight in their respective careers, Mahomes has been a big fan of the NBA superstar.
Often seen at Dallas games, the Texas native has been a huge fan of the team and its Slovenian centerpiece.
So, when news of the trade first came out, Mahomes, who almost never tweets, replied with: “Wait what?” Just a few hours later, when the realization settled in and everyone figured out that the trade was real, he had another tweet to send out. “I’m sick rn…..”

When asked about the trade during media night, he had a similar reaction. “As a Dallas fan, it hurts me. But I’m happy for him, that he’s going to be able to go out there and be in LA and get to try to achieve his dream of winning a championship.”

Mahomes would go on to speak about how much Dončić meant, not only to the Mavericks franchise but the city as a whole. Just a few weeks ago, reports emerged of the five-time All-Star purchasing a $15 million home in the area to firmly settle down long-term in the city.
“He did so much, not only for the basketball team but the city of Dallas. So I’ll always be appreciative of those years.” But, like a true sports junkie and team loyalist, he wasn’t swayed in his support of the team, going so far as to endorse the new crop of players, Anthony Davis and Max Christie.
“I’m excited for the Mavericks moving forward and the guys they brought in.” After his initial hesitance and reaction to the trade, the two-time NFL MVP had a similar reaction on social media as well, claiming, “Kyrie and AD going to be nice tho!”

It remains to be seen how it pans out for Dallas and GM Nico Harrison moving forward. But at the very least, they still have the support of arguably their biggest fan in Mahomes.
