Jameis Winston is shooting his shot, and Kansas City Chiefs fans are here for it. The veteran quarterback, who spent the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns, went viral during Super Bowl Opening Night after a conversation with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
Fans Love the Idea of Jameis Winston on Chiefs’ QB Roster
Winston, who is working with FOX Sports Digital as a correspondent for Super Bowl 59, took a moment to express his admiration for Reid and subtly pitched himself as a potential Chiefs quarterback.
“Coach, I’m honored to grow up during this time to see you coaching in multiple Super Bowls, for my favorite team (Philadelphia Eagles) and now for the Kansas City Chiefs,” Winston said.
“Man, I hope I can play for you one day. I know it’s free agency.”
The exchange continued as the former New Orleans Saints QB even brought up Reid’s famous Punt, Pass, and Kick competition clip, earning a laugh from the legendary coach. Reid, ever the class act, responded by saying he wished he could throw like Winston.

That was all it took to send Chiefs Kingdom into a frenzy, with fans quickly hyping up the idea of Winston as Kansas City’s next backup quarterback.
X erupted with reactions to Winston’s comments. “Future backup for Mahomes? 👀” one fan posted.

Another chimed in, “Honestly, I’d take Jameis over (Carson) Wentz as a backup. Heck, Andy Reid may be able to coach him up to throw fewer picks.”
One simply appreciated Winston’s boldness, tweeting, “You miss all the shots you don’t take… love this!”
Another wrote, “The fact that he brought up the Punt, Pass, and Kick was priceless.”
One X user tweeted, “fox to Jameis be like… go brother advertise as much as you want XD.”
One more fan commented, “Chiefs need to get this man as a backup QB for next season!”
Fans have good reason to speculate since Kansas City will be in the market for a backup quarterback in 2025 when Carson Wentz hits free agency. Winston was clearly having fun during his chat with Reid, but his interest in finding a new home is very real.
The 31-year-old quarterback still wants to play and showed in 2024 that he has something left in the tank. In nine games with the Browns, Winston threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
It’s that latter category that has always been Winston’s biggest demerit. In his 10-year career, Winston has thrown 111 interceptions, including a staggering 30 in 2019. But if there’s any coach who could refine his game, it’s Reid.
Could Kansas City be the perfect landing spot for Winston? The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes locked in long term, but they need a capable No. 2.
Winston has the arm talent, experience, and personality to fit right in. If he doesn’t land a starting job, don’t be surprised if he finds himself wearing red and gold next season.
