Patrick Mahomes has a massive task ahead of him as he prepares for his third consecutive Super Bowl appearance with the Kansas City Chiefs. But even he was baffled by the shocking NBA trade announced late Saturday night.
Mahomes’ favorite team, the Dallas Mavericks, stunned the world when they traded their star player, Luka Doncic, to the Los Angeles Lakers. And for a moment, the Chiefs’ star quarterback couldn’t believe it.
Patrick Mahomes in Disbelief Over Mavericks Trading Luka Doncic to Lakers
Mahomes is known for liking the Mavericks and backed Doncic for the MVP award last year. But Dallas sending the Slovenian player to Los Angeles in a three-way trade with the Utah Jazz disappointed Kansas City’s QB.
The three-time Super Bowl champion expressed disbelief reacting to the news late Saturday night on X (formerly Twitter).
“Wait what?” he wrote
After absorbing the shock of the unexpected trade, Mahomes expressed his disappointment in another post and wrote.
“I’m sick rn….”

In addition to Doncic, the Mavericks are trading Maxi Kleber and Markeiff Morris to the Lakers and will receive Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Los Angeles’ first-round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft. Meanwhile, Utah received Jalen Hood-Schifino and the Mavericks and the Los Angeles Clippers’ 2025 second-round draft picks.
Despite Mahomes’ disappointment in Doncic’s departure from dALLAS, he welcomed Davis’ arrival and believes the forward could produce something special with Kyrie Irving.
“Kyrie and AD going to be nice tho!” he wrote the following morning.

This week, Mahomes has a bigger fish to fry in New Orleans as the Chiefs look to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.
Mahomes will need to be at his best after nearly breaking the “workload stress” record in the AFC Championship Game.
Mahomes Logs Insane ‘Workload Stress’ in AFC Championship
Mahomes nearly broke the “workload stress” record in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. He hit a Strain of 20.5, just shy of the company’s record, per Whoop CEO Will Ahmed.
For some context, Strain measures the mental and physical grind of a player’s game on a scale from 0-21, and anything over 18 means you’re going “All Out.”

He had 245 passing yards, one touchdown, 43 rushing yards, and two rushing scores in the win. His magical playoff run comes after a regular season where he finished 10th in PFN’s QB+ metric.
Mahomes passed Joe Montana for the second-most playoff wins by a starting quarterback (17) and John Elway for the second-most playoff game-winning drives by a quarterback (seven).
Already regarded as one of the greatest players in NFL history, the 29-year-old has the chance of doing what nobody, not even Tom Brady, has done. If the Chiefs defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, they’ll secure a record third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.
