‘I’m Underneath the Bar’ – UNC’s Bill Belichick Gets Real About Working Out as a 72-Year-Old Head Coach

North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" to discuss various topics, including what it's like to work out at his age.

North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick had a legendary career in the NFL before shifting his career to college football, having famously won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots during his 2000-2023 tenure. On Wednesday, Jan. 29, Belichick made an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” and made it evident that his success coaching star athletes does not translate to his own physical abilities as a 72-year-old.

Bill Belichick Talks About Working Out as a 72-Year-Old Coach

During Belichick’s appearance, he discussed several topics, including the upcoming Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. However, in a moment of levity, Pat McAfee asked Belichick if he still gets under the bar to show the kids that he’s still got it. Belichick laughed and responded.

“I’m underneath the bar. I don’t think I still got it, but yeah, I’m underneath the bar (laughs).”

Belichick will obviously have a younger crew of players than what he’s used to once he starts coaching at UNC. The legendary NFL head coach was hired as the Tar Heels’ HC in early December, signing a five-year, $50 million contract. The signing marked the first time that he will be coaching in the college ranks.

Despite having a coaching career that dates back to 1975, Belichick spent the entirety of his coaching career in the NFL. He wasn’t always a head coach, but he always worked for an NFL team.

Belichick was only ever the head coach of an NFL team two times. His first tenure came with the Cleveland Browns, who hired him in 1991. Belichick spent five seasons in Cleveland, leading the Brown to just one playoff appearance in that time frame, losing in the Divisional Round to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1994.

Famously, Belichick got his second chance as a head coach with the Patriots in 2000 and never looked back. He stuck with the team until the 2023 season, winning six Super Bowls alongside superstar quarterback Tom Brady. The dynamic pair reached the Super Bowl nine times while together.

Now that he is at UNC, Belichick will need to work with much younger players than he is used to — players who could be more than 50 years his junior.
