Baltimore Ravens star cornerback Marlon Humphrey just finished the rigors of an entire football season following the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round. Now, he’s learning how to play a new position as he learns how to be a father to his newborn son.
Marlon Humphrey Learns Fatherhood on the Fly After Birth of First Son
Humphrey, son of former Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins running back Bobby Humphrey, became a father in December to a newborn son named Duke. Now that the football season is over for Marlon Humphrey, he gets to go home and learn how to play the new position of father.
The Ravens star credits his own father for learning how to be a good dad.
A few weeks in with the kid thing…My son really be crying for no reason. I be trying to get him to chill. But I haven’t found the recipe just yet.

Humphrey said that his father was tough on him growing up, but that he was very fair and helpful.
“My dad has kept me in line. Since I was young, I told my dad I wanted to play in the NFL, and he never let me slip,” Humphrey said after signing a five-year deal worth $98.75 million in October 2020.
“Things I wanted to do, he was able to tell me no and didn’t really show an explanation, but as I grew older, I was able to understand why he did those things. He coached me when I was younger, he’s been everything for me along with my mom. So I really thank him a lot for what he’s done, and I hope one day I have a family and I can treat my daughters and sons the way my dad has treated me and my brothers and sisters.”
Humphrey said he is getting the hang of fatherhood and is trying to outsmart the newborn. So far, it just isn’t working.
“A few weeks in with the kid thing,” Humphrey said on X. “My son really be crying for no reason. I be trying to get him to chill. But I haven’t found the recipe just yet.”
Humphrey will soon learn babies do not come with an owner’s manual, but he’ll figure out how to keep his son happy and content just like he learned how to blanket a wide receiver.
He remembers what happened the day the baby was born but did not actually watch. Humphrey said he closed his eyes, and boom, the baby came down the birth canal into the doctor’s waiting arms. He did not watch because he did not want to pass out.
“It was a lot. I was just trying not to pass out or anything. I was trying to make the moment about her and the baby. I was just head down,” the proud papa said.
“The baby came out. I didn’t even really see it. I’m a little wheezy, and I’ve never pushed past the wheezy, and I didn’t think that was the day. So it was a lot. But I’m thankful. God is good.”
