When looking at the top prospects in this year’s draft class, many NFL scouts and draft experts have had trouble determining which one should be the first overall pick. Unlike most years, there is not one player that has established themselves as the consensus first pick.
That is partially because the first pick is usually a quarterback, and this is considered a weak year for quarterbacks, despite the fact that Shedeur Sanders is available. However, Travis Hunter is someone many experts agree is the best player in the draft.
Recruiting Expert: Travis Hunter Is the Best Prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft
While there is no consensus first overall pick, many people agree that Hunter is the best player in the draft.
However, many people hesitate to say he should be the first pick because he is not a quarterback. There is also concern that he will not be able to play both wide receiver and cornerback at the NFL level.
However, recruiting specialist Steve Wiltfong is not concerned about anything regarding Hunter. On Jan. 22, he posted on X why he thinks he should be the first pick.
“Travis Hunter is the EASY No. 1 pick. He’s the best player. There isn’t a no-brainer, sure-fire NFL stud signal-caller in this draft. Hunter elevates everyone around him. Draft him (play him at WR), try and sign a QB in free agency and roll from there.”

As Wiltfong said, there are no players in the 2025 NFL Draft class that is a sure-fire superstar. There are lots of players who could grow into that position. However, there is not one that has proven at the college level that they are 100% deserving of being the first pick.
For example, Sanders had a great season for the Buffaloes. He was an offensive force for Colorado alongside Hunter. Nonetheless there were issues in his game. He had problems holding onto the ball for too long and taking bad sacks. There were also concerns about him performing well when he is out of the pocket.
Hunter won the Heisman Trophy for a reason this season. He had a dominant season as both a cornerback and wide receiver. While he might not be able to play both positions full-time, he can still play a bit of both positions and provide a lot of value to a team.
