The biggest name being tossed around? None other than Josh McDaniels, a two-time Patriots offensive coordinator (2006-08, 2012-2021), is rumored to again be the frontrunner for the role.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier, “Most people believe that Josh McDaniels, former Patriots OC (actually a couple times), still lives in New England, currently not working, would be a prime candidate for the job. Considered to be the favorite. I would expect Mike Vrabel to talk to him as they go about the process to try to find a new offensive coordinator.”

McDaniels, 48, boasts a lengthy Patriots CV, having spent 18 years with the franchise in several roles ranging from personnel assistant, defensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, and obviously, offensive coordinator.
His expertise, particularly with quarterbacks, is well-documented, from crafting Tom Brady’s legendary career to guiding Mac Jones to an impressive rookie campaign in 2021. Yet, McDaniels stumbled as a head coach—first with the Denver Broncos (2009-1010) and then with the Las Vegas Raiders (2022-2023). However, fans are divided on the idea of McDaniels making a third stint in Foxborough.
One fan wrote, “They said he would have other options and interviews. Hopefully, someone else steals him and forces the team to go elsewhere.”
Another said, “This honestly doesn’t seem like new reporting. I think this has been the assumption from the start and still remains the assumption.”

Vrabel is keeping his cards close to his chest. He stated that the Patriots want to conduct a comprehensive search for the role rather than rush the decision.

McDaniels has proven he can work wonders with the right personnel, and given his track record, the Ohio native might just as well land in New England once again and play a crucial role in shaping the team’s future.
