Kevin O’Connell has quickly established himself as one of the most promising head coaches in the NFL. Leading the Minnesota Vikings to multiple 13-win seasons in his first three years, O’Connell has set a new standard of excellence in Minneapolis.
Yet, as the team heads into a critical offseason, uncertainty looms over his future. With reports of behind-the-scenes tension and interest from other NFL teams, the Vikings find themselves at a crossroads.
What Is Going On With the Vikings Coaching Staff?
When asked about signing a contract extension, O’Connell’s response did little to calm the waters, replying, “I’ve had great dialogue with our ownership this week in reflection as the season came to an end. Anything beyond that, I’d prefer to keep those discussions internal,” he said.

The comment came just days after Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer dropped a bombshell during the “Jay Glazer Coaching Carousel” segment. According to Glazer, multiple teams are actually considering trading for O’Connell, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025 season.
While this could be a negotiating tactic on O’Connell’s part, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that tension exists between O’Connell and Vikings ownership, stemming from their decision not to offer him a contract extension last offseason.
The timing of Glazer’s revelation — right before the Vikings’ crucial Jan. 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions — received some criticism, as Minnesota entered the game with the chance to secure both the NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the conference.
Instead, they suffered a lopsided 31-9 defeat, failing to rise to the moment on one of the season’s biggest stages. The fallout from the Week 18 loss to the Lions carried into the postseason, and just over a week later, the Vikings were eliminated in the NFL playoff Wild Card Round in a frustrating 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, with a scoreless fourth quarter from both teams.
Could the timing of the report have created a ripple effect that contributed to the disappointing end of the Vikings’ once-promising season?
Adding to the drama, according to Florio, the relationship became strained when O’Connell did not receive a contract extension last offseason despite his success. The lack of a long-term commitment may now complicate negotiations and raise questions about O’Connell’s future in Minnesota.
Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Brian Flores, a key architect of Minnesota’s defensive improvement, is drawing significant interest from other teams. Flores reportedly has head coaching interviews lined up with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chicago Bears, raising the possibility of another major offseason shakeup for the Vikings.
Despite the turmoil, O’Connell has expressed a desire to remain with the franchise. “I do,” he told reporters when asked if he wanted an extension. Still, with more than 20 players set to hit free agency and key coaching staff potentially on the move, the Vikings face a critical offseason.
While O’Connell’s comments and Glazer’s report may be part of a calculated strategy to secure a new deal, questions about his and key staff members’ futures, like Flores, raise significant concerns about the Vikings’ long-term direction.
