MSN Slideshow The 10 Head Coaches With the Most Playoff Losses in NFL History By Pro Football Network FacebookTwitterReddItFlipLinkedinEmail January 15, 2025 | 9:00 AM EST Share FacebookTwitterReddItFlipLinkedinEmail 1 of 11 He might be the most wanted man in all of Pittsburgh right now. Despite not a single losing season in his NFL career, Mike Tomlin has a less than ideal 8-11 record in the playoffs, worsened by his streak of 0 playoff wins since 2017. With a woeful postseason tenure with the Dallas Cowboys now in the rearview mirror, Mike McCarthy didn't help his playoff standings, dropping to an 11-11 record. Since 2017, he has won just one playoff game, making his situation even worse. It is odd that three Mikes in NFL history have exactly 11 playoff losses, but Mike Holmgren is the eldest name with 11 postseason losses during his tenure with the Packers and the Seahawks. An 11-11 record in his career belies the success Pete Carroll enjoyed as a head coach in the NFL, going to two-straight Super Bowls with a 1-1 record in them. Over his 18-year career, spent predominantly with the Seattle Seahawks, he compiled an 11-11 W-L record in the postseason. Over 22 years as a head coach, Chuck Knox did not have much postseason success to show for his tenure. Making 11 playoff appearances, he lost 11 out of 18 games. Over an 18-year career, Bud Grant won 4 NFC Championships with the Minnesota Vikings. However, his tenure in the postseason ended badly, losing 3 of his last 4 matches for a 10-12 overall record. A 21-year coaching career did not lead to much postseason success for Marty Schottenheimer, despite his impressive 200 total wins in the NFL. He finished his career with an abysmal 5-13 playoff record, making it the worst mark on this list. From the worst to the best, Bill Belichick also suffered 13 career playoff losses. However, he paired it with 31 victories and 6 Super Bowls, both numbers the most of all-time. The 13 losses speaks more to how often his team was in the playoffs. Andy Reid could very well end up leading the list in the next four years. If the Chiefs suffer another playoff loss, he will move into place, but for now, the 3-time Super Bowl Champion has 16 playoff losses against 26 victories to his name. Tom Landry was the architect behind Dan Marino and the electric Miami Dolphins. Over a 29-year career, he made 18 playoff appearances, compiling a 20-16 record in that timeframe. The all-time leader in NFL wins as a head coach also has the most losses in the playoffs in NFL history. More a result of longevity than production, Shula made 19 playoff appearances in his 33 year career, finishing a game above dead even at 19-17.
