MSN Slideshow The 10 Head Coaches With the Most Losses in NFL History By Pro Football Network FacebookTwitterReddItFlipLinkedinEmail January 14, 2025 | 6:00 PM EST Share FacebookTwitterReddItFlipLinkedinEmail 1 of 10 Over his illustrious 26-year career as an NFL head coach, Andy Reid has seen the highest of highs, with 3 Super Bowls to his name. However, he has also seen the doldrums of the sport, with 146 losses in his career, with a 4-12 year standing as his worst season till date. Over a 22-year career as the head coach of the Seahawks, Rams and Bills, Chuck Knox compiled an impressive 186-147 record. However, that second number lands him on the list, led by a 4-12 record in his final season. This has more to do with time than production as George Halas ended his 40-year coaching career with a 318-148 W-L record. His worst year came in 1929 when the Bears won just 4 games on the season. 23 seasons as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers gave way for one of the greatest dynasties of all-time. What makes it even more impressive for Chuck Noll is that his first season began with a 1-13 record. As the architect of the two Eli Manning Super Bowls, Tom Coughlin made an indelible mark on the sport. However, he also compiled 150 losses in his career, led by his first year in the league where he began with a 4-12 record. This is perhaps the best example of the duality of the sport. The winningest coach of all-time also suffered 156 losses in his 33-year career, none worse than the 6-10 year Miami had in 1988. Another classic example of longevity, the 29-year career of Tom Landry saw him lose 162 times as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. What makes his stat impressive is he bookended his career with 0-11 and 3-13 seasons. While he had some incredible highs, Dan Reeves also saw some dramatic lows in his 29-year career. Splitting time between his success with the Broncos, New York, and Atlanta, he had a 3-win season with the Denver Broncos under his belt. A 22-year career saw Jeff Fisher compile one of the worst coaching records on this list at 173-165. With multiple 4-win seasons under his belt, his tenure wasn't extremely memorable for Houston, Tennessee, or the Rams. The greatest coach of all-time is also the one with the most losses in NFL history. While he had incomparable success with Tom Brady at the helm, the likes of Mac Jones dragged his overall record down. Aside from two 5-win seasons, his worst year came in the final season of his New England tenure, when he led the team to just 4 wins.
