Colin Cowherd Believes Ryan Poles’ Head Coach List Is ‘Unserious’

Cowherd blasted Bears general manager Ryan Poles live on air, declaring, “There’s not this many great candidates, why are you wasting your time?” The Bears, one of the worst teams in the NFL this season with a 6-11 record, are on a fishing expedition with their exhaustive and seemingly unfocused coaching search.

Poles has reached out to a list of potential candidates, including heavy hitters like Pete Carroll, Mike Vrabel, and Brian Flores, but Cowherd isn’t impressed. “Folks, this is not ‘American Idol,’ I’m not here for the fun tryouts. What the hell are you doing? You’re wasting time on second- and third-tier candidates. This is just too broad of a list, It’s unserious,” he stated, pointing fingers at the Bears’ inefficient hiring spree.

Cowherd believes that the Bears should focus on top-tier candidates who can bring immediate success to a franchise desperate to climb out of the NFC North. “Somebody else is hiring Mike Vrabel,” Cowherd said, suggesting Poles should concentrate on securing elite coaches who have proven their mettle rather than spreading resources thin across a broad and underqualified pool.

The Bears’ current predicament is dire. Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed promise as the franchise quarterback but didn’t get the support he needed to excel and feel at home. Poles is under pressure to make the right hiring decision to maximize Williams’ skills. A misstep now could derail Williams’ potential and keep the Bears stuck in mediocrity for years to come.

The NFL analyst compared the coaching search to house-hunting in a competitive market: “If you qualify for a $5 million house, skip the fixer-uppers. Don’t even stop off at the condos. Get to the big boy houses,” he said on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” urging the Bears front office to aim high and avoid settling for less.

The Bears GM remains steadfast, defending his strategy of casting a wide net. This is a high-stakes decision, and the Bears simply cannot afford to botch their most crucial hire of the offseason.

The Bears must streamline their process and secure a head coach to lead them back to glory. Only time will tell if Poles takes Cowherd’s advice to heart or continues with endless interviews and missed opportunities.
