NFL legend Shannon Sharpe has clarified his recent comments about Kirk Herbstreit in a new edition of the former’s popular podcast ‘The Nightcap.’ In the video now released to X (formerly known as Twitter), Sharpe explained how the two men had discussed the incident and have now moved on.
During the Ohio State Buckeyes-Tennessee Volunteers College Football Playoff matchup, Herbstreit took a shot at how the popular show “First Take,” a show that regularly features Sharpe, handled and covered Ohio State and their head coach Ryan Day when the program was struggling earlier in the campaign. As a result, Sharpe responded and heavily criticized Herbstreit in a now-trending video earlier this week on an episode of “First Take.”
What Did Shannon Sharpe Say About His Discussion With Kirk Herbstreit?
Sharpe made clear that he was still frustrated with how Herbstreit called out the show he appears on and believes the comments were unnecessary in general given the circumstances. He also outlined his original reasoning in criticizing the Buckeyes and Day earlier in the year, citing crucial regular-season losses in games Sharpe believes they absolutely should be winning.
“I was disappointed because I didn’t think that added anything to the commentary,” Sharpe explained.
However, he did make clear that both men exchanged a text conversation and that the incident was now behind them and in the past.
“Herbie and I are good now. I am glad we had the text conversation,” he stated.

Was the “First Take” Ohio State Criticism Fair?
Although they are now having success in the College Football Playoff and recently defeated the Volunteers in dominant fashion, the Buckeyes and Day were deserving of criticism at an earlier point in the season.
With disappointing losses to the Oregon Ducks and Michigan Wolverines, many fans and analysts alike — not only “First Take” — were critical of the job Day was doing at Ohio State.
However, it is also understandable why Herbstreit took exception to the comments. As Sharpe alludes to in his podcast, Herbstreit is an Ohio State University alumni and has become good friends with the Buckeyes head coach in recent years.
As a result, it makes sense that the comments by numerous television programs such as “First Take” would frustrate the ESPN college and NFL Prime Video analyst.
The trending incident appears to be behind both Sharpe and Herbstreit.
