Brock Purdy’s future with the San Francisco 49ers just became a hot debate, and Nick Wright is stirring the pot. The sports analyst says the 49ers shouldn’t rush into a contract extension for Purdy. Wright’s advice comes with a mix of caution and practicality, suggesting it might not be worth committing big money yet.
While Purdy has shown promise, Wright warns that paying him big bucks too soon could backfire. All eyes are now on the 49ers’ front office to see if they’ll listen to Nick Wright’s advice or bet big on their young QB.
Nick Wright Warns 49ers: Don’t Pay Brock Purdy and Sacrifice Talent
On “First Things First,” Wright strongly advised the 49ers against offering Purdy a contract extension, arguing that paying him big now would hinder the team’s ability to maintain a championship-caliber roster. Wright’s critique comes after Purdy’s impressive run last year, which raised questions about whether his success stemmed from his talent or the elite system around him.
Wright pointed out a significant flaw in Purdy’s performance under pressure. Despite excellent numbers and team success in 2023, Wright raised doubts about Purdy’s ability to overcome adversity.
“Last year, we were debating a hypothetical,” Wright said. “He was objectively — excellent numbers, excellent team success, and among my biggest concerns, along with dealing with adversity and comebacks, was how much of that is this awesome cast and system, and how much of that is him, and that was, it was unprovable, right?… And the answer is — not good. The answer is he looks incredibly mediocre.”
“If you pay this player, you are not going to be able to have the talent around him that he needs to look great, so I would not pay this player.”

Wright’s point is clear: if the 49ers commit major salary cap space to Purdy, it’d mean sacrificing talent elsewhere. In NFL terms, you can’t have a top-tier quarterback and still stack a roster full of Pro Bowl-caliber talent across other positions financially. “To me, it is incredibly obvious if you pay this player, you are not going to be able to have the talent around him that he needs to look great, so I would not pay this player.”
Wright believes that a big Purdy contract would force tough choices, undermining the depth required to sustain a Super Bowl-ready team.
Ultimately, Wright’s advice isn’t just about numbers. It’s about strategy, balance, and future planning. The 49ers face a crucial decision: extend Purdy now and risk capping roster flexibility, or wait, reassess, and make sure they have a solid understanding of what Purdy truly brings to the table before committing long-term.
Brock Purdy Takes Accountability Amidst Team Struggles
Purdy owned up after a rough Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium, where the 49ers fell to the Los Angeles Rams in the rain. Purdy wasn’t exactly lighting it up (only 14-of-31 for 142 yards) and that fourth-quarter interception near the end zone was a killer.
"That's what hurting me. I feel like I failed the team. I could've been better for our offense."

But let’s not hang it all on him. The offensive line barely showed up, Samuel dropped a key pass, and De’Vondre Campbell bailed on the second half. Purdy’s taking the heat, but this loss was a team effort. It’s about time the 49ers figure out their offense’s true grit — and fast.
