Former NFL coach Bill Belichick might be seen working his magic at the collegiate level next year. The football world was buzzing when the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach dropped hints about his potential move to college football.
Bill Belichick Wants To Revolutionize College Football
Appearing on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ the former New England Patriots coach confirmed rumors about him engaging with the University of North Carolina about their head-coaching vacancy. While the 72-year-old remained guarded about specifics, his vision for a college program has got everyone talking.
Belichick confirmed his meeting with UNC Chancellor Lee H. Roberts, stating, “We’ve had good conversations, so we’ll see how it goes.” Though both sides have danced around the specifics, Belichick laid out a bold plan that could revolutionize college football. “Let me put this in capital letters: IF I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” he said.
His blueprint involves NFL-style training, nutrition, schemes, and coaching — a professional program tailored to prepare players for life on and off the field. UNC’s interest in Belichick seems rooted in the trend of college football evolving into a mirror of the NFL.
From high school recruiting to transfer portal negotiations, Belichick likened college football’s structure to the NFL’s draft and free agency system. “A lot of colleges are looking at NFL-type models,” he explained. Given his résumé, Belichick has the expertise to build such a framework.
Despite his age, Belichick’s pitch is anything but dated. “It would be an NFL program at a college level and an education that would get the players ready for their career after football. It would be geared toward developing the player,” he said.

The former Patriots head coach wants to develop players with life skills like time management and discipline and ensure that student-athletes are ready for professional football or business careers. “I feel very confident that I have the contacts to pave the way for those players.”
For UNC, this partnership could be transformative. After parting ways with Mack Brown, another seasoned coach, embracing Belichick and his reputation could prompt UNC to bridge the gap between college and pro football. The concept of NFL-izing a college program could make the Tar Heels a premier destination for aspiring pros.
Whether or not Belichick takes the job, his vision has already paved the way for a debate about the NFL’s influence on college football. If he does join UNC, it could mark the dawn of a new era where college programs truly operate as NFL pipelines.
