Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are helping the Kansas City Chiefs chase a historic three-peat, and this is hardly the time when the Chiefs need an in-house tiff. However, tensions within the team might raise concerns for their fans, as the Chiefs’ star tight end candidly shared frustrations about his on-field chemistry with Mahomes.
Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes Are Going Through a Rough Patch
The Kelce-Mahomes connection has been a hallmark of the Chiefs’ dominance over the years. During a recent episode of his podcast, the 35-year-old opened up about his struggles this season with his co-host and brother Jason Kelce.
In what has been an uncharacteristically slow year for Kelce, the loving duo of Mahomes and Kelce seems out of sync. Despite still being a key target for Mahomes, Kelce has struggled to make the kind of game-changing plays that fans have come to expect.
“Once we get in that red zone, man, I get a little hungrier,” Kelce admitted. “Right now, for whatever reason this year, I just can’t find my way in the end zone. I’m just not on the same page as Pat, and it can get frustrating. It can get f***ing frustrating, that’s for damn sure.”
Kelce’s frustration is partly from the Chiefs’ ongoing issues in the red zone. Currently ranked 24th in red-zone efficiency per ESPN, the team has struggled to convert crucial scoring opportunities into touchdowns. Last week’s win against the Las Vegas Raiders demonstrated their offensive issues.
Kelce caught seven passes for 68 yards but failed to reach the end zone and has only managed two touchdowns through 12 games this season. The once-reliable chemistry between him and Mahomes has faltered at critical moments.
The downturn in his production has been a bitter pill to swallow for Kelce. However, the veteran tight end also acknowledges his own shortcomings, adding, “As s****y as I’ve played, it does feel good to be in my 10th year in a row making the playoffs,” Kelce noted.
Despite the frustrations, he remains optimistic about the team’s prospects and understands the importance of finishing the season strong and striving for precision and intent in their execution.
“We gotta win the division, that’s another goal that we gotta reach… Just finish strong and get violently accurate with our intentions.”
The Chiefs are prepping for Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, and all eyes will be on the Mahomes-Kelce connection.
