Former NFL QB Robert Griffin III has high praise for Colorado Buffaloes stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.

Former NFL QB Robert Griffin III believes that Colorado Buffaloes stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders should both be finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Held annually to honor the top player in college football that season, the Heisman Trophy is widely considered one of if not the most prestigious college football awards.

With the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony is held annually in New York City. Should one of Hunter or Sanders win the award this year, they will be adding their name to a list that consists of Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees and current NFL superstars, such as Barry Sanders, Joe Burrow, and many others.

What Did Robert Griffin III Say About the Heisman Trophy?

In a post released to X (formerly known as Twitter), Griffin made clear that he thinks both Hunter and Sanders should be two of the four men invited to the New York City ceremony.

Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter should be in New York for the Heisman,” he detailed.

Though a brief message, it outlines Griffin’s belief that both Hunter and Sanders’ performances this season at the University of Colorado Boulder are deserving of some further praise and admiration.

Are Hunter and Sanders Both Having Heisman-Worthy Campaigns?

With Colorado’s 2024 regular season in the books, there is no doubt both Hunter and Sanders are having Heisman-worthy campaigns for the Buffaloes. In their Week 14 game, both men were instrumental in the team’s dominating 52-0 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Sanders threw for over 400 yards and had five passing touchdowns, while Hunter had 10 catches, 116 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while on defense.

Regarding Hunter, the star dual-threat athlete has been dominant on both sides of the ball. Offensively, his speed and ability to make contested catches have been crucial to his remarkable campaign. Among all college players, Hunter ranks fourth in receiving yards (1,152) and second in receiving touchdowns (14) this year, not yet accounting for Saturday’s slate of Week 14 games.

Defensively, his elite footwork and anticipation have seen him create five turnovers for the Buffaloes this season (four interceptions and a critical forced fumble versus Baylor).

For Sanders, his strong ability to pass from and control the pocket, in addition to his pinpoint accuracy, have been on display all season long. Among qualified quarterbacks, Sanders is second in passing yards (3,926), and first in passing touchdowns (35), not yet accounting for Saturday’s slate of Week 14 games.

While it remains to be definitively seen whether both men are finalists for the coveted trophy, it is clear that Hunter and Sanders are having standout campaigns for the Buffaloes and have Griffin publicly praising their on-field performances this season.
