The idea of Deion Sanders, aka “Coach Prime,” becoming the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach is once again gaining steam thanks to NFL legend Brett Favre. With current head coach Mike McCarthy under fire amid the Cowboys’ lackluster 5-7 record, speculations are mounting that owner Jerry Jones could make a bold move for Sanders.
Brett Favre Backs Deion Sanders as the Cowboys’ Future Head Coach
Brett Favre, a Hall of Famer and former teammate of Sanders’ with the Atlanta Falcons, didn’t hold back in expressing his belief in Deion’s potential to coach America’s Team. Aware of the Cowboys’ struggles and McCarthy’s position under scrutiny in his fifth season in Dallas, Favre speculated on what Jerry Jones might be planning for the offseason in an interview with TMZ Sports.
“If he [Jerry Jones] does go in the direction of firing Mike McCarthy, which I have no idea which way he’s leaning, Deion may have a shot to step in there.”
Favre’s support for Sanders isn’t just about the hype surrounding the Cowboys. Favre said he knows Sanders personally, having played together in Atlanta during the 1991 season before becoming rivals later in their careers. Favre expressed,
“I think the world of him. I know him personally, so I know what kind of character he has.”
Moreover, Sanders’ coaching résumé has been nothing short of impressive, and Favre feels Coach Prime is “definitely worth the shot.”
After revitalizing Jackson State’s program, he has turned the Colorado Buffaloes into a fierce contender. The Buffs, who finished last in Pac-12 in 2023 with a 1-8 conference record, are now placed fourth in the Big 12 with a 6-2 conference record (8-3 overall).
While Sanders has publicly expressed contentment with his current role, Jones’ persuasive nature and his deep ties to Sanders from their Super Bowl-winning days could change the narrative.
Jerry Jones Shuts Down Mike McCarthy Firing Rumors
Amid rumors of McCarthy’s firing, Jones dismissed speculation about seeking a new head coach. On “105.3 The Fan” in Dallas, Jones even mentioned a possible extension for McCarthy.
“This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He’s got great ideas. So bottom line is, in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen indications about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of the year. And we shouldn’t. We’ve got a lot of football left.”
