The Dallas Cowboys’ disastrous 2024 season has sent their fans into an uproar, and owner Jerry Jones isn’t helping matters. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, the Cowboys owner sparked outrage by refusing to rule out extending head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract.
Fans are already frustrated with the team’s 4-7 record, and they have flooded social media with questions and trolling about Jones’ decision-making.
NFL Fans Again Upset at Jerry Jones After Latest Mike McCarthy Statement
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. This season, the 61-year-old Pittsburgh native has faced his fair share of criticism.
The Cowboys have tumbled further from Super Bowl contention. Injuries to key players, including quarterback Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury, haven’t helped matters.
Jones himself criticized McCarthy for “bad plays” in a press conference a few weeks back. Yet, after a 34-26 victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 12, the Cowboys’ GM is suddenly singing a different tune.
On the show, in reference to potentially extending McCarthy, Jones said, “I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. . . . A Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He’s got great ideas.
“Bottom line is no place in my body language or anything else have you seen an indication about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of the year. And we shouldn’t, we got a lot of football left,” Jones continued.
Meanwhile, fans are tired of McCarthy ruining the franchise. Aiming at Jones’ statement, one wrote, “Lol Mike McCarthy hasn’t coached a single good game for the Cowboys. Embarassing organization.”

“If we resign him that’ll be the final nail in the coffin for me and this team,” wrote another.
Another commented, “If we’ve learned anything about Jerry Jones, he certainly does not care about fan sentiment 😂.”
One fan tweeted, “Yet another example why it’s time for Jerry to step down or sell the team and let someone else call the shots.”
One more fan took aim at Jones saying, “The better move is to replace the current GM and President of the Cowboys. Let a new GM and President determine the fate of McCarthy.”
“Would be such a Jerry thing to do,” wrote another.
Another X user said, “Jerry jones lives on an island of delusion.”
McCarthy’s capabilities are unquestioned. Since joining the Cowboys in 2020, he has led them to three playoff appearances and two NFC East titles. Still, his postseason performances have been abysmal — just one win in four years.
Injuries across the roster have hindered the Cowboys’ season, with Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, and Zack Martin all having missed significant time. However, fans seem less forgiving and want to see real change in Dallas, whether it be the head coach or even the owner/general manager.
Dallas still has to brace for the remainder of the season, and the question of McCarthy’s future will continue to draw attention with every passing game.
