Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys once again lost at home, this time 34-10 to the Houston Texans. Dallas has lost all five home games this season and has given up an average of 37.4 points per game while losing with an average differential of 23.6 points.
The team is 3-7 on the season, and McCarthy is under a lot of pressure. He is in the final year of his contract, and legendary Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant believes that the head coach’s time is up in Dallas.
Dez Bryant Believes Mike McCarthy’s Time in Dallas Is Done
“McCarthy era should be done in Dallas…” wrote Bryant on X (formerly Twitter). This came after the Cowboys were once again embarrassed at home, which has made their head coach even look worse and might impact his future opportunities in the NFL.
Bryant is not the first one to say that McCarthy will not return as Dallas’ head coach next season, as many projected the current scenario before the season even began
McCarthy became the Cowboys head coach in 2020; since then, he has a record of 45-32. During his five seasons in Dallas, the team made the playoffs thrice but had only one win in the postseason to show for it, which came in the Wild Card Round of the 2022 NFL season.

McCarthy was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers before his stint in Dallas. He was fired after Week 13 of the 2019 NFL season after the team started season 4-7, a situation similar to what is happening this year with the Cowboys. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed a few weeks ago that he will not fire the head coach during this season, but things can change quickly in the NFL.
This Cowboys team has many flaws, and changing the head coach mid-season is not going to change much. They are unlikely to make the playoffs, and the front office should let McCarthy finish the season, as it might help them land a higher draft pick.
Dallas’ running game was again ineffective as the Cowboys rushed for just 64 yards compared to the Texans’ 141 yards. Cooper Rush threw the ball 55 times for 354 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, completing 58.1% of his throws.
The offense has looked quite bad with Rush as the quarterback, and the team should look to give some playing time to Trey Lance. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is unlikely to be their savior, but his mobility and explosive arm can provide some spark to their offense.
Bryant Wants the Cowboys To Hire Deion Sanders
Bryant was active on his X account during the Cowboys’ loss to the Texans, and he brought up the idea of the Cowboys hiring Deion Sanders.
“I’m the @dallascowboys to the heart. If I’m the Cowboys, I’d fire everyone after this season,” said the former Cowboys star. “There’s young, hungry talent in the upcoming draft. Also, I’d consider @DeionSanders as the next head coach.”
When a fan responded to the above comments saying that Sanders doesn’t want to coach in the NFL, Bryant brought up that the Colorado head coach is already coaching millionaires in college football due to the NIL.

“I’ll consider it if I were Jerry. To me, Deion Sanders is no different than Jim Harbaugh. Coaches who have played the game are the new thing!” added Bryant.
Many Cowboys fans and players related to the franchise would love to have Sanders as their next head coach, but the possibility of that happening remains unlikely. Colorado’s Athletic Director Rick George recently spoke on the “Zero 2 Sixty” podcast and made it clear that the NFL legend is not leaving the program.
“I think there’s a lot of people out there that, you know, wanna say he’s just jumping in Boulder, [Colo.,] and he’s out of here. Deion’s not going anywhere,” George said. “The guy is committed here. He’s just getting started, and I feel really good about our relationship and his love of Boulder and our tradition here, and the community’s embraced him.”
Coach McCarthy has already reportedly put his $5.7 million mansion up for sale because he probably knows he will not return next year. With Coach Prime expected to stay in Colorado, the Cowboys will likely pursue Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and/or Ben Johnson as their next head coach.
