Is Chase Brown Playing in Week 10?

Brown (rib) was listed as a full participant on Monday’s practice estimate.

Per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, Brown suffered a bruised rib in Sunday’s win over the Raiders, but the running back’s listed full participation a day later indicates that his availability for Thursday night’s game against the Ravens is not in danger.

With Zack Moss on track to miss time with a neck injury, Brown appears poised to maintain a heavy workload versus Baltimore and likely beyond, after logging a career-high 27 carries against Las Vegas.

Should You Start or Sit Chase Brown in Week 10?

The Bengals went out of their way to bolster their backfield at the trade deadline by way of Khalil Herbert, a move that could be read one of two ways.

    • They aren’t sold on Chase Brown as a bellcow
    • They aren’t sure Zack Moss will take the field again this season

Realistically, it’s probably a combination of both, though Brown did show well for himself last week in producing his third RB1 finish of the season (32 touches for 157 yards and a TD against the Raiders). That said, the momentum is working away from Brown, and we know that Herbert offers a dose of upside (career: 4.8 yards per carry).

    • Weeks 1-6: 25.2% over expectation
    • Weeks 7-9: 13% below expectation

I’m pessimistic here. The Bengals have a pair of tough matchups coming (Ravens and Chargers) before they go on bye in Week 12. If Brown struggles to be efficient in those difficult spots, is this a full-blown committee as we work into December?

Brown is a low-end Flex this week, and that might prove to be the high-water mark for the rest of the season.

PFN Insight on the Ravens’ Defense

The Baltimore Ravens’ defense has briefly flashed upside this year, but there has been no rhyme or reason as to why they have come outside of outlier results. Week 9 was just the second time that the Ravens have been inside the top 15 in a single week this season (Week 3 vs. Buffalo). Outside of that, it has not made for pretty reading.

The Ravens’ main success defensively has been against the run, but they have struggled against the pass. A large part of that has been an inability to generate consistent pressure without committing extra men to the pass rush. Additionally, the Ravens have also ranked 30th in third-down conversion rate this year, but their ability to stiffen in the red zone (15th) has meant it has not shown up as much as it could have.
