New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson stunned fans with his “Catch of the Year” play during their 21-13 win against the Houston Texans.
While Wilson was receiving praise from the NFL world for his mesmerizing catch, his teammate Davante Adams was worried about his friend’s deal with Adidas.
Garrett Wilson’s Catch Sparks Conversations Over Adidas
“I told him he might get kicked from Adidas after that one,” Adams said. “That one looked like he headed over to Jumpman with me. I’m gonna talk to some people.”
Adams’ concerns arose from the striking similarities between Wilson’s catching pose and Adidas’ biggest rival, Nike’s Michael Jordan-owned icon.
Adidas released a statement saying, “He’s not going anywhere,” reaffirming its intentions regarding the Jets wide receiver. Wilson also light-heartedly addressed the situation and posted the moment on Instagram with a caption, “I ain’t tryna stunt man, but the Yeezy’s jus jumped over the….”
According to Apex Marketing Group, Adidas generated $2.5 million in media value across television, radio, and online news, making it a win-win situation for both the brand and the player.
Wilson completed the one-hand touchdown catch on Thursday night, reminding fans of Odell Beckham Jr.’s electrifying catch against the Dallas Cowboys almost 10 years ago. The Jets wide receiver caught a ball from quarterback Aaron Rodgers with just one hand up in the air and both his feet above the ground.
During the post-game press conference, Wilson gave a humble but thrilled reaction to the Beckham comparison:
“I was watching live. … Odell’s was different. And he got two feet down, the ball was going to land out of bounds, and it’s Odell man, Odell against the Cowboys. That was the one. So, to even come up in that convo, I am blessed and honored.”
Davante Adams on the Garrett Wilson one-handed TD: “I told him he might get kicked from Adidas after that one. That one looked like he headed over to Jumpman with me. I’m gonna talk to some people.”
