What Happened to Andy Dalton? What We Know About the Carolina Panthers QB Being Involved in a Car Accident

Andy Dalton was involved in a car accident on Tuesday -- here's the latest on the Carolina Panthers quarterback.

Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Andy Dalton was the subject of some scary news on Tuesday. According to an official statement by the team, Dalton was involved in a car accident in Charlotte, N.C.

The statement read, “Andy Dalton and his family were involved in a car accident today in Charlotte. Neither Dalton nor his family were transported by emergency medical personnel. Dalton is being evaluated by team and medical personnel.”

Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that there were any serious injuries stemming from the accident.

NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reported that Dalton, his wife, three kids, and dog were in the car at the time of the accident. None were transported by emergency medical personnel.

Will Andy Dalton Play in Week 8?

Jones added that Panthers medical personnel were evaluating Dalton. When this article was published, no details have been provided on any potential injury.

The reporting does not suggest that any serious injuries are likely, but we won’t know that for sure until further reporting confirms the nature of Dalton’s injuries (if any).

The 36-year-old (who will celebrate his 37th birthday next Tuesday) has been Carolina’s starting quarterback since Week 3. Dalton led the Panthers to a 36-22 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in his first start but has started four consecutive losses since.

For the season, Dalton has thrown seven touchdowns to six interceptions with 989 passing yards.

Will Andy Dalton Stay QB1 on the Panthers’ Depth Chart?

He took over for former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, who was benched after two games. Young’s Panthers tenure has been disastrous, as the former Alabama quarterback is 2-16 as a starter with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Young has appeared in two games in mop-up duty since being benched, going 6-of-9 for 54 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions.

With the trade deadline approaching, Young has been the subject of trade rumors. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini noted that she’s keeping an eye on Young as someone who could get moved by the Nov. 5 deadline.

Dalton is on a one-year contract but could conceivably return to Carolina for the third straight season if he wants to play in 2025. At that point, the Panthers will likely have a new long-term plan at quarterback.
