Rob Gronkowski Reveals What Makes Patrick Mahomes ‘Possibly’ Better Than Tom Brady

Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski gets candid on the Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes debate and pointed out the special trait of the Chiefs' quarterback.

Many believe that Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes could finish his career with more Super Bowls than Tom Brady. If he does, he’ll widely be believed as the greatest football player of all time.

Brady currently holds that crown. He’s won seven Super Bowls in his career and has his name on numerous records. Former tight end Rob Gronkowski, who won four Super Bowls with Brady, recently talked about both quarterbacks and gave his thoughts on what makes the Chiefs’ QB special.

Rob Gronkowski Dishes Thoughts on Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady Debate

In a conversation with Julian Edelman on “Dudes on Dudes,” he said that although he thinks Mahomes will never be better than Brady, there is one thing that makes the reigning Super Bowl MVP unique.

“That’s actually what makes Patrick Mahomes possibly, possibly better than the GOAT [Tom Brady] in the end… is that he can extend plays to a whole another degree. But he’s never going to be better than Tom. Even if he is. I’ll never say that because I love Tom,” said Gronkowski.

“But the way he can extend plays, that’s what makes the Kansas City Chiefs so good. He’s about to be sacked, and he just rolls out, spins off a defender, and then he throws it to Travis Kelce or Tyreek Hill when he had him, or no-name, seventh-rounder like you, Julian [Edelman]. Once again, making that seventh-rounder famous like Tom did with you. That’s why these quarterbacks are great because they’re making us famous as well.”

Mahomes has won three Super Bowls so far in his career and on teams with different kinds of situations.

He won his first one by leading an explosive offense featuring Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Mahomes’ second one came with JuJu Smith-Schuster as his WR1, with Kelce still playing like the future Hall of Famer he is. Notably, Mahomes played on a bad ankle throughout the playoffs, which was quite remarkable.

Mahomes’ third one was the toughest due to the personnel around him. The Chiefs’ offense struggled last season, with his receivers dropping several catches. However, in the postseason, they turned on the switch and came up big in clutch moments to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

In order to catch Brady, Mahomes still has to win four more Super Bowls. However, based on what we’ve seen so far, if any quarterback could dethrone Brady as the “GOAT,” it would be Mahomes.

Gronkowski complimented Mahomes’ ability to extend plays, and it will be intriguing to see whether he will continue to do that as he ages.

    Comparing Mahomes’ and Brady’s Stats

Mahomes was drafted in 2017 and became Kansas City’s starting quarterback in 2018. In his six seasons as the starter (not including this season), he’s thrown for 28,140 yards, 219 touchdowns, and 62 interceptions in 95 games with a passer rating of 103.7, completing 66.5% of his throws.

In his first six seasons as the New England Patriots starter, Brady threw for 21,558 yards, 147 touchdowns, and 78 interceptions in 95 games with a passer rating of 88.4, completing 61.9% of his throws.

Brady was a Pro Bowler in three of these seasons, compared to Mahomes’ six Pro Bowl selections and two MVP awards. The Patriots’ legend won his first MVP award at the age of 30 in his eighth season.

Both won three Super Bowls each in their first six seasons as starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Yet, based on stats, Mahomes has had a better start to his career.

If he continues to play like that and matches the Super Bowl wins, it will be hard to deny that Mahomes is not the greatest football player we have ever seen.
