Skylar Thompson Injury Update: Latest News Surrounding the Dolphins QB in Week 3

The Miami Dolphins were forced to make an in-game quarterback change due to injury for the second straight week on Sunday.

Ten days after Tua Tagoaviloa suffered a concussion that landed him on injured reserve, his backup, Skylar Thompson, got knocked out of the game as well.

With Thompson out of the game, Tim Boyle – who was on the practice squad Saturday morning – took over as the Dolphins quarterback.

    What Happened to Skylar Thompson

The Dolphins have ruled Thompson out with a chest injury, but the hit that knocked him out of the game was far from the worst one he took.

Linebacker Dre’Mont Jones gave Thompson a routine shove, but he couldn’t get up for several minutes.

It was the ninth quarterback hit that Thompson took in two and a half quarters. He was also sacked four times. On one of those hits, he seemed to favor his ribs.

Boyle is on his fifth team in six years. He has a career 62.3% completion percentage and a 55.2 rating.

He’ll be in the game for as long as he’s healthy. The only other quarterback on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster is Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, but he’s the emergency quarterback for this game and only eligible to play if both Thompson and Boyle get hurt.

Fantasy Impact of Skylar Thompson’s Injury

The majority of the fantasy impact on the Dolphins’ offense came when Tua went down. The drop-off from Tua to Thompson was a chasm, and it shows in the lines of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The two Dolphins receivers have combined for 57 yards on five receptions from seven targets.

Dropping down to Boyle is hardly going to make any difference, but it would just cement that this offense is in wasteland territory for fantasy managers. The only way this can be salvaged is if this convinces the Dolphins to go out and get a free-agent quarterback option such as Ryan Tannehill.

Huntley is the other option, but it is unlikely that he considerably increase anyone’s fantasy value. His ability with his legs could mean he can provide his own fantasy value, but he is unlikely to elevate those around him.
