J.J. McCarthy was among the most crucial factors in the Michigan Wolverines’ triumphant 2023 college football championship. It’s why fans were thrilled to see the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft take the stage in the regular season.
However, unfortunate events transpired during the Minnesota Vikings’ preseason matchup in Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Vikings backup quarterback had a torn meniscus in his right knee and underwent surgery shortly after the injury. He will now spend at least six weeks with a knee brace and on crutches, and a full recovery takes around six months.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell shared that the procedure was a successful one while admitting that he’s crushed for the team, the fan base, and most importantly, McCarthy.
He later reaffirmed that the fans should be excited regardless to have a talented, young quarterback on the team. Until then, McCarthy will be learning O’Connell’s offense from the sidelines.
On Saturday, McCarthy and his fianceé Katya Kuropas’ dog, Marley McCarthy, updated fans on their beloved quarterback by sharing two cozied-up snaps with the former Michigan star.
The English Cream Golden Retriever shared that he’s been busy being the best nurse and therapy dog for the Vikings quarterback. Kuropas applauded Marley for his efforts and called him the “best boy in the whole world.”
What Does J.J. McCarthy’s Injury Mean for the Minnesota Vikings?
Even though Sam Darnold was likely going to be the QB1 for the Vikings in September, McCarthy’s impressive performance in the preseason opener gave fans a sneak peek into his abilities.
With McCarthy out, Darnold is set to take the reins as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. The former New York Jets signal-caller, who was the third overall pick in 2018, had a tough start to his NFL career and joined the Carolina Panthers three years later. There, he started 17 games in 2021-22 before signing a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
Darnold was appointed as Brock Purdy’s backup quarterback for the season, except when the 49ers decided to rest Purdy in the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Darnold contributed 16-for-26 for 189 yards and scored one touchdown along with one rushing touchdown in the 21-20 loss.
