Jacoby Brissett Injury: Patriots QB Hurts Shoulder Early in Preseason Finale

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett suffered an apparent shoulder injury early in his team's preseason game against Washington.

The New England Patriots‘ quarterback competition took an interesting turn Sunday night.

Jacoby Brissett suffered a shoulder injury early in his team’s preseason road game against the Washington Commanders. Brissett, who’s been battling Drake Maye for the Patriots’ starting QB job, finished his drive but was replaced by Maye on the next series.

Brissett injured his throwing shoulder while being sacked on the game’s first drive. The veteran quarterback was seen grimacing and pointing at his shoulder but appeared to wave off teammates showing concern.

    Here’s a video of Brissett’s injury:

Brissett stayed on the field for two more plays before the Patriots punted: a short completion to tight end Jaheim Bell and a deep incompletion to receiver K.J. Osborn. The throw to Osborn was on the money and should’ve been caught.

The Patriots later ruled Brissett questionable to return due to a shoulder injury.

After Maye entered the game, NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark offered an update on Brissett.

“He came to the sideline after the Patriots’ first drive, he was grimacing, grabbing that right shoulder,” Stark said. “He had a quick conversation with the head athletic trainer. No exam took place. He is now standing on the sideline with his helmet on and he’s pointing to his right shoulder.”

Maye led the Patriots to a touchdown on his first series. Earlier this week, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said he wanted to choose a starting quarterback by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
