    Miami Dolphins Make QB2 Decision

Skylar Thompson has apparently beaten out Mike White for the job to back up Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa.

The Miami Dolphins have cut quarterback Mike White, PFN can confirm, clearing the way for Skylar Thompson to serve as Tua Tagovailoa’s primary backup.

The Dolphins could conceivably bring White back on their practice squad. But in the unlikely event they do, White won’t see anything close to the $3.5 million he was set to earn on Miami’s active roster.

It’s likely that White will have better options elsewhere. He and Thompson were both on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster for all of 2023, but it, in retrospect, was probably a misallocation of resources.

Tagovailoa was healthy and started all 17 games. Thompson didn’t feel the field all season serving as Tua’s No. 3. But he had a strong summer — both in practice and in Friday’s preseason finale.

On Friday, Thompson completed 19 of 27 passing attempts for 190 yards and two touchdowns. He did force a late interception, but it came when the Dolphins were in a must-pass situation down two scores.

White, meanwhile, had his third straight poor performance in as many exhibition games, completing just five of nine passes for 37 yards.

Thompson was a seventh-round draft pick by Miami in 2022 and is on track to win a spot on the team’s 53-man roster for the third time in as many seasons.

As a pro, he’s thrown for just 534 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in regular-season games, but he does have the experience of starting a road playoff game for Miami.

And he’s playing at a higher level now than at any point in his career.

“There [were] a lot of plays tonight [where] I felt growth, and I felt the reward of putting time into getting better,” he said Friday. “I think everyone can relate in every aspect of life, when you put time into something and feel the results and feel that pay off, it’s a pretty cool thing.

“This whole camp, my mindset has been the same; I’ve just been really focused on the right things and just trying to get better each and every day and just trusting that — even when it doesn’t feel like it, still trusting it and putting in the work to do so.”

In addition to White’s release, the Dolphins also let go of tight end Jody Fortson on Sunday.
