Should I Draft Jalen Hurts? Eagles QB Could Be Fantasy’s QB1

    Published on

Jalen Hurts has established himself as arguably the best dual-threat quarterback in the NFL. Can he continue that excellence for fantasy managers?

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had another Pro Bowl season in 2023, establishing career highs in passing yards and touchdowns but struggling down the stretch. Although some other important numbers declined last season, key additions to the offense could see Hurts produce like the MVP contender he was just two seasons ago.

Let’s see how his production shapes Hurts’ fantasy football outlook entering the 2024 season.

Jalen Hurts’ Fantasy Profile for the 2024 NFL Season

As mentioned, Hurts is coming off a season in which he threw for a career-best 3,858 yards and 23 touchdowns, also a career-high. Throw in another career high for touchdown runs (15) and you have all the makings up a career season, right?

Well, it didn’t go quite that way for Hurts.

For starters, Hurts threw a career-high 15 interceptions, and his interception percentage (2.8%) was more than double his percentage in 2022 (1.3%) — the highest of his career.

In addition, Hurts’ yards per pass attempt (7.2) was down from the previous season (8.0), and his yards per completion (11.0) was easily the lowest of his career.

Even his ability to run the ball — a staple of Hurts’ game — had mixed reviews last season. Yes, he had 15 rushing touchdowns, tied with Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen for the second-most in the league, but his rush attempts (9.2 per game), rush yards (35.6 YPG), and yards per carry (3.2) were all down significantly from his impressive 2022 season. For that, he likely has a knee injury to thank.

All this aside, from a fantasy standpoint, Hurts was one of the league’s biggest producers. His 356.8 points last season ranked second among quarterbacks, behind only Allen (392.6). And Hurts’ fantasy points per game (21.0) followed suit.

Is Hurts a Good Fantasy Pick?

Hurts is QB2 in Pro Football Network’s Consensus Fantasy Football Rankings as of Aug. 22.

To upgrade on offense, the Eagles went out and added former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley and former Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

If healthy, this could potentially be the most explosive offense in the league. Along with Hurts and Barkley, the Eagles can boast receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown — arguably the best duo in the league — and a quality tight end in Dallas Goedert.

These additions to Philadelphia’s offense should only help Hurts continue to put up elite fantasy numbers. He has averaged at least 20 fantasy PPG in each of his last three seasons, and in 2023 he hit that mark 10 times.

The consensus says that Josh Allen will be the first quarterback selected in fantasy leagues. And while Allen has put up numbers that make him worthy of being the first QB selected, the Eagles’ upgrades could help Hurts have the best fantasy season of his career.
