Fun Ways to Decide Your League’s Draft Order
There are endless possibilities when it comes to fun ways to generate your draft order and get away from just having the reverse order of last year’s standings.
In the spirit of the Olympics, why not have a 100m race to determine the order, or go even further and have your own decathlon of events you and your friends dream up? It could be anything, including the actual decathlon events, NFL Combine events, or a mix of things that you and your league mates like to do. For every event, you score points based on finishing positions, and whoever has the most points at the end of all the events gets to choose their spot in the draft first, with all the finishing positions taking it in turn.
Alternatively, if you want to make everyone think on their feet, you could race to the draft location to have to claim your spot on draft day itself. That leaves everyone coming into it having to devise a plan on the day, as you could end up drafting out of any of the 10-12 spots available. Maybe you make it more interesting by having tasks for each person to complete on their way, so it isn’t just a case of who can drive the fastest or run the quickest who wins.
A bit part of the fun of creating your own draft order is coming up with a way of doing so. Take your time, be creative, and most importantly, be willing to try different things each year until you find the ultimate method that you want to keep going forward.
Extra Settings to Make Your Fantasy League More Exciting
Much like setting your draft order in a creative way, there are a number of settings you can consider to mix up your league. You can even change them every year to really keep your league fresh and exciting. The simplest of these can just be adding more roster spots to change up the strategy and increase the depth of the league. The balance there is not going too far and leaving people starting third-string RBs.
If you want to limit the “luck” element of the league but keep the head-to-head, then why not instigate a 2-win system? The basics of this system are that you get one win for winning your matchup and then a second win if you finish in the top half of the league each week. That means if you are the second-highest-scoring team each week but keep losing to the highest-scoring team, you still get a win.
Other options for mixing up your league include changing the scoring settings to reward big plays (tiered PPR), altering the way you decide your playoff teams, or switching up your draft in a variety of ways.
