Saturday’s preseason opener for the Kansas City Chiefs was a rough one for Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champs. It began with free agent wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown leaving on the first play with a shoulder injury, and then it ended in a 26-13 defeat against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The three-time Super Bowl winner Mahomes, though, showed he was in a heartwarming mood on Sunday after the 13-point preseason-opening loss.
Patrick Mahomes’ Wife Shows How He Enjoyed Day Off
Mahomes was in a relaxed state following the loss to the Jaguars, literally.
The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, took to her Instagram stories to show Mahomes enjoying an “off day with Oreos and snuggles.”
Mahomes was photographed with two of his three toddler children and covered in a white and black, Oreo-style blanket.
The photo, though, shows that Mahomes is already back home and away from St. Joseph, Mo., the site of the Chiefs’ training camp. It also shows that Mahomes is being a dad and not worrying about the loss or football in general.
How Did Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs Fare in Limited Action?
Stars in the NFL like Mahomes, let alone starters across the league, rarely get called to play during August. Most teams would rather rest their starting lineup, especially their quarterbacks, ahead of Week 1 of the regular season.
But it was far different for the back-to-back Super Bowl winners.
Mahomes joined the likes of Travis Kelce, Isiah Pacheco, and Company in getting greenlit to start ahead of the Jaguars game. Who made the decision for K.C.? It wasn’t Mahomes urging to play but his head coach Andy Reid who made the decision.
“As far as the play time for this game, we’ll go the ones for a quarter, twos for the second quarter, threes the third quarter, and fours for the fourth quarter, and we’ll just keep it at that,” Reid told reporters leading up to the Jaguars game.
As for how long Mahomes and the starters lasted, it was less than 10 plays. Mahomes engineered a seven-play, 43-yard scoring drive that ended with a Harrison Butker field goal to start the game.
Still, the talk of the opening drive involved the top free agent WR addition Brown. He went down awkwardly on his shoulder on the game’s first play, which ended in an 11-yard completion. Brown later had to go to the hospital and was revealed to have suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation — which Reid compared to what former Chiefs star WR Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019, also against Jacksonville.
Mahomes ended his evening throwing only four passes, completing three for a total of 27 yards. His strike to Brown was his lone pass that surpassed 10 yards. Kelce ended the game with one catch for seven yards while Pacheco added a nine-yard reception.

Kansas City cycled through four quarterbacks, including the Super Bowl MVP. Chris Oladokun delivered the most passing yards (85). The 2022 seventh-rounder out of South Dakota State finished 7-of-10 and averaged 8.5 yards per pass. Newcomer Ian Book completed eight of nine passes for 46 yards but got sacked three times. Another new QB, veteran Carson Wentz, saw action and completed all four of his throws, totaling only 26 yards.
But as Mahomes showed the next day via his wife, “Oreos and snuggles” put him in a more relaxed, heartwarming state.
